“Do you know how to make ‘Preacher Cookies?’ one of my friends asked me. I was quick to respond. “Yes, if you mean those no-bake chocolate oatmeal things.” I’m not sure where the name Preacher Cookies came from-my dad was a minister and we never had these at my house when I was growing up. I’ve also heard them called ‘cow pies,’ ‘boiled chocolate cookies,’ ‘stovetop chocolate,’ ‘easy chocolate peanut butter cookies,’ and ‘chocolate oatmeal bars.’ It doesn’t matter what you call them, they’re easy to make and taste delicious.
No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies
I first tried these cookies when I was in high school. In an (unsuccessful) effort to avoid calculus and physics, I enrolled in every home ec class I could find. Interior design, sewing-even though I was the person who could have sewn all four sides of a skirt together-cooking, you name it, I took it. Thanks to my efforts to avoid serious instruction, I was given the recipe for these cookies and instructed to make them for class. The rest, as they say, is history. I’d found a recipe that earned a permanent place in my kitchen.
One of the best things about this recipe is that it uses common pantry or fridge ingredients. No need to shop at a specialty store or drive around town trying to find them. I’m looking at you, Juniper Berries, that I needed for my Christmas Wassail.
Printable Recipe
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 3 cups old fashioned oats
- In a large saucepan, add the sugar, milk, butter, and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Allow the mixture to boil for one minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.
- Stir in the vanilla extract, the salt, and the peanut butter until blended.
- Add the oats. Stir until they are completely blended.
- Spread the mixture onto a piece of waxed paper. Refrigerate until firm, at least 20 minutes and up to an hour.
- Break into pieces and store the cookies in an airtight container or freezer for later.
Cooking Tips:
*Gather all the ingredients together before you begin. The last three must be added quickly when the chocolate mixture is removed from the stovetop.
*Want to make this recipe gluten-free? Use gluten-free oats. Not all oats are gluten-free so be sure to check the label.
*You can substitute chunky peanut butter for the regular peanut butter if you prefer.
*Store them in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days, or freeze the cookies for up to two months.

Have you tried these without sugar? Would it work with applesauce? Getting pinned and so is your banana pudding- it’s Sweetie’s fave!
No, I haven’t. I’m not sure if it would work with applesauce as it uses the sugar as a binder. If you try it, let me know how it works!
