| Found Money Can Help You Treat Yourself to An Occasional Splurge |
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a money tree growing in the backyard? I’ve never seen one but my children seem to think one has firmly taken root on our property. Of course, one of our main expenses is doctor bills because my children never seem to be well. We have a continuous flow of unexpected expenses, but a limited budget. Here’s some ways I’ve discovered to “find” a little extra cash.
1. Start a change jar.
We did this when we wanted to save for a vacation two years ago . By adding a small amount of change a day or even once a week, you’ll be surprised at how quickly it can add up. I added change I found in pockets when doing the laundry or any change my family was unfortunate to place on a table or bureau. At first everyone complained but being able to splurge on our vacation made it worth it.
2. Take the Kids’ outgrown clothing to a Clothing consignment shop.
This is a win-win situation. Customers can receive cash for their gently worn kids clothing and find great bargains on clothing for the kids. Most consignment shops only accept fashions not over a year old and in good condition. I’ve seen brand new name brand jackets with the tags still on them for over $100 less than an identical item in the store next door.
3. Trade in or Sell books at the Used Book Store.
I love visiting our local library but it is small and limited in its selection, often not having the book I need. I am fortunate enough to live fairly close to the largest used book store in Tennessee. I pop in there and can usually find what I need. When I am finished I exchange it for store credit. Used bookstores, or at least ours, sell much more than books. They have dvds, cds, blurays, video games for all systems and board games. It’s one stop shopping for my entire family.
4. Sell Your Stuff.
All of us have used stuff lying around the house. It could be an xbox the kids have outgrown, a musical instrument that’s gathering dust, old sports equipment or any number of items. Advertise and have a yard sale , sell them online or sell them to a shop that specializes in that item.
While I can’t promise you will make a fortune with these techniques, I know you will be able to use them to “find” money. Even if it’s only a small amount it can help with bills or a small splurge. What is your best money tip?
I have a piggy back that I only put quarters in, this is money that I have for a rainy day — I also stash dollar bills in purses, pockets and have a zip lock bag in the freezer with a $20 bill . Emergency money all around
