Having had to check into home security after my father’s home was broken into, I know the importance of protecting our home. The cost to protect and secure your home and loved ones is not as prohibitively expensive as you might think. There are, in fact, lots of thrifty ways you can make the home feel safe. Here are four tips to secure your home on a budget.
1. Basic Home Improvement
Tall bushes surrounding the front door are incredibly dangerous because of the limited visibility they provide a person coming out the door. If you have bushes flanking any entrances that are too tall to see over, trim those back.
You should also consider a decent set of outdoor lights. Even a small set with the motion activation feature are not terribly expensive and are easy to install. These are perfect for shining a light on anyone or anything foolish enough to trespass.
2. Minor Adjustments to Your Routine
This could be anything from how you throw out your garbage to making sure you close the shades at night. When it comes to trash, if you have anything telling – say, the big, obnoxious box your expensive television came in – you should make sure it fits in the trashcan instead of leaving it at the end of the driveway.
Remembering to close the shades at night is important because it limits what outsiders can see. If an intruder can’t scope out the scene, they can’t formulate a plan or “case” your home for an intrusion in the foreseeable future.
3. Bringing a Dog into the Family
Statistically, homes with dogs are less likely to be hit than those without. For the most part, burglars are looking for stuff to steal, not trouble. That’s usually what a canine represents.
4. Investing in a System
The market for home security has only gotten better over time and you can find tons of different systems and providers out there. Services like www.homessecurity.com are just one of many different home security providers that can help make the home safe. Many of these services offer competitive prices that even the most frugal homeowner can afford.
Great tips and sooo helpful nowadays. My dogs are also my alarm, they hear the slightest movement and wake or pace in the house…
Good tips. My dog is my favorite security. She don’t let anyone within 5 feet of our property line and is very protective of me. I love it 🙂
if i had a home like that?…i would get lost in the front yard
Great information and advice. Enjoyed reading this.
Great advice, thanks! Our dogs are certainly a good deterrent, but I’ve thought about getting a home security system, too. Nice to know there are affordable options out there!
