I’m a “fur mom” to a herd of rescue cats. From fosters that were forgotten to kittens found on the side of a busy road, our motto could be “hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats.” Okay, five. Sometimes the smell from their litter boxes seems like we own hundreds of cats. We are using Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze purchased from Sam’s Club (because we go through a lot of litter and it comes in 42 pound bags) and the packaging makes it easier to handle and carry. But, even if you don’t have cats, you need a bag of this cat litter. Why? you ask. Because cat litter can be used for so much more than its original purpose. Here’s five other uses for Cat Litter that will make you say You Gotta Be Kitten Me! Yep, I went there.

1. Remove Odors From Coolers. If someone has ever left a smelly item in your cooler and forgotten about it (I’m looking at my kids!), the smell could knock you down when you open the cooler. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of Cat Litter to a sock and drop it into the dry cooler. Close the cooler and allow the litter to set for 48 hours. The smell should be gone!

2. Make Draft Stoppers for doors or windows. Have you ever been lying in bed on a cold winter night trying to get cozy only to notice a slight breeze filling the room? Brrrrr. Solve the problem by making inexpensive door stoppers. If you are handy and can sew, use a pattern and stitch up a door stopper.  If you are like me and can’t, you can make one by filling a stocking with litter and tying the ends or placing a plastic bag of litter in a small blanket, rolling it up and tying ribbons to the ends.

3. Make Low Cost Weights. Working out at the gym can be expensive. Why not make your own low cost weights using a recycled water bottle? Fill 16 ounce bottles, one liter bottles and two litter bottles to have a variety of sizes to amp up your workout.

4. Give Plants More Water. Droughts are common in our area, leaving us with a ban on watering any outdoor plants. The result? Frustration and dead plants. Mixing equal parts of potting soil and cat litter to pots before planting helps the plants retain moisture, saving plant lives and leaving me a happy camper gardener.

5. Save that Cell Phone. We’ve all heard of adding a wet cell phone to a bag of rice in hopes of saving it, but did you know adding it to a bag of cat litter can help absorb the water more quickly giving you a better chance of saving your electronics?

Of course, using Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze in it’s original use is great too because it contains Borate Technology for superior ammonia control. In other words, it acts as a antimicrobial agent inhibiting  the growth of odor-causing bacteria. And, if you have cats, who doesn’t want that?
