5 Great Gift Ideas for Teens

It’s notoriously hard to find presents for teenagers. I remember searching for a gift for my teen niece. I spent hours finding an expensive sweater I knew she would like. One day, when she was wearing it, someone remarked how much well the color looked on her. After her disparaging complaint about the sweater, I decided I wouldn’t be putting that kind of time and effort into another gift. For her next present she received a Spanish –English dictionary. She’s never complained about her presents again, probably because I took an informal poll of teens I know and came up with this list of prefect presents.

1. Cash.
People might complain cash is cold and impersonal, but for a teen who is saving up for a car, computer game, or other coveted item, this is much appreciated.

2. Video Games and Accessories.
This is a hot item for many teens. The problem is knowing which gaming systems they have and which game, sometimes even which version, to buy. I’ve discovered that a quick call to the parents or a chat with the teen usually gives me all the answers I need. When in doubt, have them make a list of the top five items they want. This also provided an escape route in case they want a hot game that is out of stock or in short supply.

3. Gift Cards.
Teens usually have a distinct style. My daughter has been given lovely clothing over the years that she refuses to wear because of the texture of the fabric or the material from which it is made. Gift cards allow them to choose the correct item every time.

4. Snack Baskets.
This one is especially good for starving college students. Gather up their favorite snacks and store them in a large wooden basket. I’ve never know a kid to become upset when given a basket of the favorite foods.

5. Gas Cards.
Gas is expensive. For a teen on a budget, having their gas paid for can allow them to splurge on something else.
