The kids are getting older and are no longer up for the traditional egg hunt. While I was browsing the aisles at Walmart, trying to think of new Easter ideas to try out on them, I walked past a display of Hallmark cards and a light bulb went off in my head. I had a super de dooper idea for some Easter games that could get the 10 year old enthused; an Easter Treasure Hunt.
I began by browsing through the Hallmark display and choosing five Easter cards. Did you know you can earn rewards for the Hallmark cards you buy at Walmart? For every 5 cards you buy, you’ll earn a reward. They also have value cards for 47 and 97 cents. Once I selected the cards I wanted, I began looking for Easter Basket ideas. I knew I didn’t want to fill it full of candy, so I picked up a bubble wand, a glow stick, pencils and bubble gum. I did pick up a lollipop and a small package of candy and a few pieces of candy to add in the cards. When I arrived home, I printed clues on the computer using picmonkey and pasted them, along with a small piece of candy in each card.
Now it was time for the fun to begin! I walked around my in-law’s farm and hid an Easter card with clues inside in five different spots. (Notice that a big farm=more room for walking. Helpful hint: Make sure the kids are occupied and don’t come strolling along to see what you are doing. This happened to me and I had to find new hiding places.) I sat the 10 year old down and handed him his first clue, telling him he *might* find a surprise at the end of the trail. As you can see from his expression, although he pretended to complain, he got into the spirit pretty quickly.
He wandered all over the yard and the pastures picking up clues, including the barn lot, where he got photobombed by a nosy sheep or two who suspected the card might contain food.
He was thrilled when he finally found his Easter Treats hidden beside the hen house. He declared they were all for him and he was not sharing, even though I hinted loudly about receiving some bubble gum. I have plenty of other ideas for reusing the cards in Easter crafts. They could easily be used as backgrounds for so many projects!

Oh this is so much more fun than what I do for the kids. Usually the Easter Bunny hides their baskets, one year the bunny hid it in a dryer… craziness. Then I take eggs filled with various items and money. I hide them all over the home or yard (depending upon the weather) and the kids have fun looking high and low for them!
My grandmother used to do something like this for us when we were growing up. It was always so much fun!

Each year we had an Easter basket treasure hunt, with each kid needing to find his/her own hidden throughout the house. It was such a fun part of the tradition and the fun of the holiday. – Katy

What a fun idea! Makes the kids think and then get rewarded at the end. My girls are still little so we do the traditional egg hunt at the house, but of course to make it even and ‘fair’ we put initials on the eggs. Can’t handle anymore tears than I have to.
Treasure hunts are always great! I love the idea of hiding everything all around the farm and the pictures are amazing! I didn’t know Hallmark had that incentive with the cards, either. What an awesome thing to do, especially with the price of the cards being that low. I always do easter baskets for my kids, but never with sugary candy. Last years theme was gardening, so I put in a lot of garden themed items and special seeds for what they would like to see sprouting in their area of the garden. This year, I have no clue!
This is a great way to make the traditional Easter egg hunt for for older kids! I’m so grateful that Easter is a little bit later this year…maybe we’ll actually have enough snow melted by then to hold our egg hunt outside!
We just do Easter egg hunts here, but the idea of a treasure hunt sounds great. I did a scavenger hunt similar to this for my husband one Valentine’s Day and it was definitely a nice change from the normal gift exchange.
I do hints and a hunt for Easter too. My kids still love it even at their age. My dad started the tradition when I was a kid and I carry it on. I love seeing your son’s excited face!

This is a great idea! I remember my mother putting together something like this when I was younger. Scavenger hunts are always fun and this is a nice change from the traditional Easter egg hunt. The older kids would probably love this too.

We do an Easter egg hunt every year, but we are actually going to be traveling this year over Easter because it falls during the kids school vacation week -so no egg hunt for us 🙁
