My kids have always been big fans of Legos; begging for them whenever we went to the store. I usually gave in because they would throw in the “But’s it’s educational and encourages creativity” speech. Who was I to deny them educational opportunities? Plus, I had to admit it encouraged creativity, even if it was just in their sales pitch to me. Naturally, when given an opportunity to visit the Lego KidsFest in Atlanta “filled with interactive, creative and educational activities for the whole family” and jam packed with “hands-on educational fun for all ages,” I signed us up for an evening of fun.
The Lego KidsFest is divided into sessions, each lasting four and 1/2 hours, spread over a weekend. Because all sessions include the same activities, we were happy to arrive at the first session on Friday evening, hoping it would be less crowded. I was wrong. It was packed! Fortunately, there were plenty of workers for crowd control and the tables were set up in a way to allow several people to participate at once. We started our session at Creation Nation, where a basketball court sized map of the United States was laid out. We were encouraged to build a creation to be placed on the map to represent our part of the country. Of course, we had to make the logo for the Georgia Bulldogs. When I handed it to the worker he looked at it and said, “So this goes in Athens, right?” We were rewarded for our endeavors with a small set of Lego blocks to take home. Later, as we walked by to see how much the map had filled up since we had built our figures, a worker pointed out to us, “Georgia is filling up quickly. Someone even made the Georgia Bulldogs symbol!” “I bet those people are good builders,” Bryan quipped.
Another of our favorite activities was the Lego challenge, where families were encouraged to team together to build the tallest tower that could stand on its own in two minutes. Surprisingly, we managed to build a fairly tall tower that remained standing . Once again we were rewarded for our efforts with a small pack of Star Wars legos to take home.
My favorite feature was the Lego Museum, with cool statues made from Legos. We found everything from Buzz and Woody to figures from Star Wars and the Hobbit.
We received tickets to the Lego KidsFest through US Family Guide. All opinions are my own.
