I have the hardest family in the world when it comes to buying Christmas gifts. My in-laws and father are the worse. My dad would mention he wants an item. I will purchase the item, wrap it nicely and put it under the tree. On Christmas Eve he would show up at my house with the item I purchased, saying, “I stopped by the store and picked this up for myself.” My in-laws had everything they needed. The entire family would wrack our brains, trying to think up ideas. We tried all sorts of ideas; gardening tools, magazines, you name it. The one item my father-in-law seemed to love was gourmet coffee. “I really liked the coffee you gave me,” he would say, “if you have more, I can always use it.” I decided coffee was the way to go. Last year, I discovered World Vision International, a global Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
I was able to find a Fair Trade Coffee Set, developed by onecup.org. The coffee is a mixture of beans from Ethiopia, Sumatra, and Costa Rica, packaged in a hand-sewn bag by local African women. Included in the gift set is a hand carved Olivewood scoop, designed to benefit 200 orphans of the Kamba tribe. It’s a total win-win for me. I am able to furnish my father-in-law with a gift he loves and I help needy families around the world.
World Vision has other gifts as well. If you have a fashionista in the family, they have handmade clothing items, almost guaranteeing that no one else will show up at an event wearing the same item. Check out their catalog and see how you can help others and please your family.
