I am not a fan of snow. It’s beautiful to look at, but I have a few problems with it. Snow equals cold weather, which is my nemesis. Give me hot weather anytime! I also live in an area that receives little snow. When it does snow that 1/2 to 1 inch we usually receive once or twice a winter, the entire area shuts down. Maybe that’s because our county has one snow plow. It’s a recent purchase too! If you are like me and love the beauty of snow without the effects, this DIY Snow Covered Window craft is for you.
I started with one of my old window frames. I have a collection from when the old windows were removed from my Grandmother’s home and replaced. If you are wondering where to find old windows try flea markets, estate sales or find a house that’s remodeling. Many of these people are happy to give away their old doors or windows. I wanted a rustic look so I didn’t paint it, but feel free to paint the window in your choice of colors.
After washing the window panes and allowing them to dry completely, I added snowflake decal stickers. I found mine in the Christmas clearance section at Walmart for $2.48. Now is the perfect time to check out winter clearance sales at craft stores too.
Next, using a sponge brush, I added a thin layer of glue to the windows. Tip: Be sure to do this one pane at a time or the glue might dry before you are ready. You can use School glue or ModPodge, but ModPodge dries clear.
As soon as I had spread the glue, I added a thin layer of Epsom salt. I gently scratched some of the salt off my decals and allowed the picture to dry. Tip: Allow it to lie flat on the ground to dry.
Finally, spray the window with a clear sealant and allow to dry. ModPodge and Krylon make versions of this. It’s available at craft stores. I’ve achieved the snowy look without having to deal with the mess of the real thing. That’s my kind of snow!
That is so cute! I love using old things to make something new and beautiful.
Such a beautiful DIY work done out of a old window, which looks really creative as well. The snowflake decal stickers adds more beauty to the output & its is great that you got it for such a low price.
What a fun DIY idea! It would be perfect to do here in Los Angeles, since we don’t get snow. I can make our own snow fun.
Love making things from old window panes. This looks like a cute DIY for winter. Would rather have faux snow than the real deal, any day! Great project!
Cute project. Living in Wisconsin – I have lots of snow outside. My friend in Texas would love this!
This is so cute! I love snowflakes and winter. I definitely want to save this for next winter and have my boys help. So creative!
That is such a great craft idea! Epsom salt! That’s fantastic! I love the options too.
What a great project! I love the idea of using the Epsom salts for the texture. Very clever!
What an adorable idea! And perfect for those of us that don’t get a lot of snow in the wintertime!
How pretty. I love it! Our windows are all pretty covered in snow here, but I like this much better. So much prettier and very clever!
Your area sounds great to us: both my husband and I are NOT fans of the PA snow falls!
I like your DIY snow project – great for those holiday seasons also!
Oh, that’s pretty! I love old windows, and you’ve added to this one beautifully!
This is very lovely DIY, you’re so creative and I’m sure my kids would love it.
This is a great way to bring life to an old window! Such an easy craft to make and the materials are not hard to find and not expensive at all. Thanks for sharing.
That window is so pretty! I want to make this project.
What a darling project! Now to find a Grandmother with some extra windows!
This is neat. I will remember this next Christmas.
What a fantastic idea! I wonder what it would look like in San Diego!
I have some old windows in frames out behind one of the outbuildings. This is a very clever idea. I think I’ll make a snow scene and hang the frame on one of the bare walls of a shed or utility building on the side that doesn’t catch a lot of sun. It will dress up the yard and remain a great conversation piece!
Love the old window, creative. I am not a fan of snow, I agree it is pretty to look at and that is it.
It does not snow in our area of the country so my kids would love the opportunity to create their own snowy scene. I love that this craft involves upcycling too!
This is such a pretty decoration. I love the use of old windows like this.
That looks amazing with those snowflakes. The Epsom salt really makes the windows look frosty.
We may have to do something like this here. Since we live in GA too, we always want snow but rarely get it. Maybe this would pacify my two boys??
Same situation in North Carolina. We have had one snow this year and it didn’t stick.
Old windows are such a fun thing to hang up, but MAN, are they heavy. I end up sitting them against a wall like you did.
What a cute and creative idea. This is the only kind of snow on my window that I want to see.
Me too!
That is so beautiful. My daughter’s would love this, and I think it would be fun to make with them.
I would totally get my kids involved in the project, too! It’s a great way to spend some quality time together!
I love that old window! Such a neat DIY project idea, thanks for sharing.
What a creative idea this is. It’s perfect for winter time and I just love it 🙂
