How to Make Easy DIY Mint Sugar Scrub

I started my herb garden with a few varieties of mint. It was recommended to me as “easy to grow” and “impossible to kill.” This is true. I have so much mint I routinely give it away, use it in recipes and feed it to my rabbits. And I still have mint leftover. As mint continued to spread through my yard, family members began to run over it with the lawnmower whenever they thought I wasn’t looking.

To be honest, I began pulling mint and dropping it in the compost pile. Guess what? It took root and began to expand there too! I gave up and started to look for new uses for mint. I found an ad for mint sugar scrubs ranging in price from $8 to $32. Seriously? As much mint as I have? “I can make this for a couple of bucks!” I thought. And so can you. Here’s how to make easy DIY Mint Sugar Scrub.

What Type of Oil Should I Use?

This depends on which oil you prefer to use. Here’s a list of common choices. Experiment and find the oil that’s right for your skin.

  • Olive Oil– It’s readily available at any grocery or big box store.
  • Tea Tree Oil– This oil is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and help to soothe the skin.
  • Vitamin E Oil-moisturizes skin and is thought to reduce hyperpigmentation.
  • Almond Oil– helps to moisturize dry skin and is thought to help dry skin conditions.
  • Coconut Oil– moisturizes skin and is thought to create a protective barrier that will help keep moisture in the skin.

How to Make the Scrub:

Step 1: Gather the mint. You’ll only need the leaves. Pick 1/2 cup to 1 cup of leaves, depending on how much mint scent you would like.

Step 2: Wash the mint under gently running water. Pat the mint dry with a paper towel. Discard any brown or wilted leaves.

Step 3:  Blend the mint in a food processor or blender until finely chopped. Remove any stems.

Step 3: In a medium bowl, mix the mint with 1 cup of sugar until blended. Stir the oil into the sugar mixture.

Step 4: Store in jars with a tightly sealed lid or in an airtight container. That’s it! In less than five minutes, you’ve made mint sugar scrub and saved at least $6 a cup.

How to Store the Sugar Scrub:

Place the scrub in an airtight storage container or glass jar. Store the container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Can You Use Dried Mint in the Recipe?

You can but it will be a less fragrant shrub. You’ll also need to double the amount of fresh mint to create 1/2 to 1 cup dried mint. The scrub with dried mint can be placed in a cool, dark, and dry location for up to 1 week.

How to Dry Mint in the Microwave:

Drying mint in the microwave is a quick and simple way to preserve fresh mint for later. Here’s how:

  • Pick the leaves from the stems. Remove any damaged or dried mint leaves. Wash the mint under cool, gently-running water for 30 seconds. Pat the mint dry with a paper towel. Tip: Make sure the herbs are completely dry before beginning.
  • Place the mint between 2 paper towels and place in the microwave at full power for 30 seconds. Turn the leaves.
  • Repeat this process 2 to 4 more times, as needed, until the mint is dried. The mint is done when the leaves are brittle and break easily. The entire process will usually take around 2 to 10 minutes depending on the number of herbs you are drying. Allow the herbs to cool to room temperature.
  • Break the mint into pieces. You can chop or dice them if you prefer.
