Who can forget the taste of fresh fruit or veggies picked straight from the vine? Summer means it’s time for “Pick Your Own” Season. There is a multitude of farms around the state offering everything from “pick your own” strawberries, to blueberries to peaches and more. I didn’t want to miss a chance to try some of the fresh fruit on our table so when I purchased two pints of blueberries, I was ready to start cooking. I had the usual options; blueberry muffins and blueberry bread, but I wanted something a little different.
Then, I remembered the Blueberry Crisp recipe my mom used to make whenever we visited my Grandmother’s farm. She’d pull it from the oven and I would hover nearby, ready to snatch a bite when she wasn’t looking. Family dinners were a serious production on the farm. You never knew who would arrive for dinner. There could be anywhere from four to twenty people and the crisp would disappear in a hurry. When blueberries weren’t in season, we’d have other crisps. In the summer there’d be strawberry, picked fresh from the garden, or a succulent peach. In the fall, when the weather turned crisp, we’d indulge in apple crisps.
I decided to switch up the recipe to add gluten-free and dairy-free options, and changed some of the ingredients, and the result was amazing. No one could tell it was missing the gluten and dairy!
Homemade Blueberry Crisp Recipe
If you don’t need an allergy friendly version, use regular flour and butter. If you need allergy friendly “butter” that tastes decent, we use Earth Balance SoyFree Buttery Spread. It doesn’t contain any soy or dairy and the baby is allergic to both ingredients. For gluten free flour, I use 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour so I don’t have to add extra ingredients like Xantham Gum. I also like a version with plenty of crust, if you prefer less crust, simply half the recipe.

Blueberries are at the height of their season here and I need to make your blueberry crisp. I’d serve it warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Looks so yummy!
This kind of sounds like an apple crisp I make. I’d enjoy it as a blueberry crisp no doubt. Blueberries are so healthy for us, I’ve been using them in any recipe I can. My mom and papa grew blueberries so I always put up gallons of them yearly.
Pass me a spoon because I want a giant bite of this Blueberry Crisp! Fresh fruit is my favorite part of the summer! MMMM!!!
Our local blueberry farm which is only a couple miles away just opened. I go picking with grandkids and family members. This year I called a bunch of friends and asked if they wanted to come pick. Headed out this week for some blueberry picking fun.
