I spent a lot of time at my aunt’s house when I was young. She didn’t have any kids so she doted on me and made me special dishes whenever I visited. My favorite was her Hamburger Stroganoff Recipe, which I guess is the poor man’s version of beef stroganov. No matter. It tasted good and didn’t take much time to make, two of my main requirements when I was a child. That’s still two of my main criteria for preparing meals so this dish is a frequent addition to the dinner table. I’ve adapted the recipe to suit our tastes read this as ‘to use what I had in the pantry without going to the store.’ And, in total disclosure, in this picture, it should be called Lamburger Stroganoff since we raise sheep and I had two packages of ground mutton in the freezer. No matter what you add, hamburger, ground turkey, or ground mutton, this Dutch Oven Hamburger Stroganoff Recipe is a sure fire way to please the omnivores in the family.
Dutch Oven Hamburger Stroganoff Recipe
This recipe is one of those that will get a little dry if you let it set and don’t serve it immediately. That’s no problem. Just stir in some more sour cream and a little and a few tablespoons of milk and it should be as good as new. If you need the recipe to be gluten-free, substitute gluten-free noodles and use gluten free cream of mushroom soup. The first time I made this I had to substitute several ingredients and I misread my aunt’s recipe. I used 1 cup of wine instead of 1/4 cup. I think my version turned out a little better.
Printable Recipe
- 2 pounds ground hamburger
- 1 to 2 tablespoons garlic (adjust this to your personal tastes)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 (8 ounces) package sliced mushrooms
- 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper (or to taste)
- 1 to 2 teaspoons paprika (adjust to taste)
- 1 cup white wine
- 1 (10.5 ounces) can Cream of Mushroom soup
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
- 2 cups penne pasta
- Place ground beef, garlic, onions, and mushrooms in Dutch Oven.
- Cook over medium heat until beef is browned. Drain beef mixture and return to Dutch oven.
- Add salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir until blended.
- Stir in white wine, cream of mushroom soup, and sour cream. Turn heat to low and allow mixture to simmer, covered, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in noodles. Allow to simmer 10 more minutes. Remove from heat.
- If mixture becomes too thick before serving, add a few tablespoons of sour cream and 1/4 cup milk.
- Adjust seasoning to your taste, but always start with the smallest amount of seasonings and work your way up. Never add the entire amount at once!
Want to know one of my secrets to preparing quickie dinners? I use this Swiss Diamond XD Nonstick Braiser. Basically, this is a Dutch Oven, which means it can go from stove-top to oven to table without missing a beat. That means I use fewer pots, pans, and dishes, saving myself cleanup time and big messes. Did I mention it is oven safe to 500°F? The heat tempered glass lid means I can keep an eye on my food without worrying about glass scattering all over my oven. Yes, that’s really happened to one of my old casserole dishes before! Plus, it has an adjustable steam vent, allowing me to control the moisture level of my dish.
Here are some other reasons I enjoy using my Swiss Diamond Cookware:
*They’re made to be tough and durable with an extra thick cast aluminum body. Swiss Diamond products have been lab tested to make sure the coating stays on the pan after 12,000 sandpaper strokes. Most standard 3-layer non-stick cookware has a finish that wears off after 1000 sandpaper strokes. That’s a big difference.
*They’re easy to use; with a perfectly flat base (no sliding off the rack!) and the handles stay cool in the stovetop.
*They’re diamond reinforced (with real diamonds!), which helps them conduct heat evenly throughout the dish. With this dish, you never have to set the stove top heat over low medium.
*They’re easy to clean. That’s another one of my top priorities for cookware. My sauce just slides off the sides and back down into the pot. While the braiser is dishwasher safe, it is recommended that it be hand washed.
My braiser also holds up to 5.3 quarts so it’s big enough to use for company and easy to adapt to a smaller meal for the family so anyone who comes to visit can enjoy Hamburger Stroganoff.
Have you tried Hamburger Stroganoff? Do you have a favorite Swiss Diamond product?
