It’s apple season! We’re only an 1 1/2 away from the apple orchards dotted throughout the Northwest Georgia hillside. Every year we take a trip to purchase apples in every possible variety, smooth apple cider, and creamy homemade fudge. I use the apples to make all sorts of dishes like my homemade apple pie filling. But, what if you want a quick apple dessert? That’s where this Easy Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake Recipe comes in.
Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake
This semi-homemade coffee cake recipe uses only 2 purchased ingredients or 3 ingredients if you want to get fancy. Here’s what you need:
- 1 can of cinnamon rolls with icing from the refrigerated section of the grocery store
- 1 can of apple pie filling- use your choice of cinnamon or regular
- if you want to “gussy it up” as they sometimes say in the South, you’ll need some caramel ice cream topping
You can use additional toppings to push it over the top like:
*Vanilla Ice Cream
*Whipped Topping
*Additional jarred Caramel Sauce
Cooking Tips
- You can use the homemade apple pie filling recipe to replace the can of apple pie filling if you have the time.
- I use a can of “jumbo” cinnamon rolls so that I will have enough dough to cover halfway up the sides of the baking dish.
- I use a 9″ by 9″ inch baking dish for cooking.
- Be sure to spray the dish with nonstick cooking spray before adding the cinnamon rolls.
- Unroll each cinnamon roll and place them side by side on a cutting board or piece of waxed paper. Use a knife to slice the cinnamon rolls into equal-sized pieces. This will help the dish to bake more evenly.
- Store the apple coffee cake tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Or You Can Make it in the Air Fryer
While this dish is easily prepared in the oven, it’s an easy adjustment to make it in the air fryer. You’ll need to follow these directions to prepare the dish in a 6-quart air fryer:
- Change the dish size to 8″ by 8″. I prefer to use a metal baking dish in the air fryer rather than a glass dish because the rapid heating can cause the dish to crack.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.
- Spray the baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Add the cinnamon roll pieces and press some halfway up the sides of the dish.
- Cook the cinnamon rolls for 8 to 10 minutes until cinnamon rolls are cooked through.
- Spread the apple pie filling evenly over the cinnamon rolls. Return to the air fryer and cook for 1 minute.
- Remove the pan from the air fryer and spread the icing pack from the cinnamon rolls evenly over the apple mixture.
To Reheat:
This pie is good at room temperature, but it is a-maz-ing when it is warmed. To warm a slice, place it on a microwave safe plate and microwave for 10-20 seconds on high.
