Georgia’s nickname is the “peach state” and for good reason. We produce masses of peach crops each year. Believe me, I know. My mother-in-law found a local farmer who’s had an abundance of peaches. She’s purchased us baskets of peaches every week for the last three months. I’ve made so many peach recipes that I’m running out of ideas. That’s why I am glad it is fall and we can switch to another massively produced state crop; apples. The kids have already gone apple picking once this fall in the North Georgia mountains, returning with a trunk stuffed full of apples. To celebrate a different fruit, I made my easy Apple Dump cake recipe.
Easy Apple Dump Cake Recipe
I’m not going to lie. I like easy recipes. I don’t mind cooking, but most of the time I’m in a hurry. I try to prepare simple meals that don’t require much time and effort but still taste good. This Apple Dump cake tastes delicious and can be made in two ways. You can make your own apple pie filling, which I like to do. Or you can do it the easy way and use a can of prepared apple pie filling. In this version, I used purchased apple pie filling, but soon I’ll share my easy recipe for homemade apple pie filling, which can be frozen and used all year long.
This version has only three ingredients and takes five minutes prep time. You can’t beat that with a stick. We like to top our pie with frozen yogurt or ice cream, but it is delicious served as it is. It can be served hot or cold, travels well and is a favorite at potlucks or church dinners. I usually bring home an empty plate.
Printable Recipe
- 1 (15.25 ounces) box of cake mix, white or yellow flavored
- 1/2 stick butter, melted
- 1 can (25 ounces) Apple pie filling
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Melt butter in the microwave for 30 seconds.
- Pour the cake mix into a medium bowl. Add melted butter to dry cake mix.
- Stir until mixture forms small crumbs.
- Pour the Apple pie filling in a 9″ by 13″ greased pan. Top with the crumb mixture.
- Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until top is lightly browned and cooked through.
Cooking Tips
*Any type of fruit pie filling can be substituted for the apple pie filling. It works well with lemon, blueberry, strawberry or cherry pie filling. Just use whatever you have on hand.
*The cake mix could be interchanged as well. Try lemon cake mix with lemon pie filling, devil’s food cake with cherry pie filling or white cake mix with blueberry pie filling.
*To make this cake gluten-free substitute a package of gluten-free cake mix for the traditional cake mix.
*This can be made in the slow cooker. Just spread the pie filling across the bottom of the slow cooker, then top as directed in the recipe. Cook on low for four hours.
