After Sun Soothing Spray Recipe

It’s confession time. Summer is my favorite season with one exception.  I never enjoyed activities that involved sitting in the burning sun. While my cousin slathered herself with SPF 4 and fell asleep on a chair, I sprayed myself with SPF 50 and sat in the shade. A day at the beach? Absolutely, but with an umbrella.

My dislike of being in the sun is because I have two shades. Casper the Friendly Ghost white, which causes people to run away, screeching, from the light reflected off my legs and lobster. The rest of my family, even wearing SPF 50, turn a toasty brown. I look like Santa Claus’ suit; mottled red and white. For my frequent burns and their occasional burns, we use this “After Sun Soothing Spray” recipe to refresh our skin.

After Sun Soothing Spray Recipe:

Long before medical studies claimed aloe vera gel could help soothe mild burns, my mom discovered this fact. She kept an aloe vera plant on the kitchen windowsill. At the first sign of redness, she had a leave torn off and ready to use.

I’ve discovered that a bottle of aloe vera gel is easier to carry than lugging around an aloe vera plant. Ok, I never really lugged around a plant, but I did keep one in my windowsill.
After Sun Soothing Spray Recipe

This after sun soothing spray has only 4 ingredients and takes minutes to make. It can be stored in a cool closet or kept in the fridge for added relief. You can alter the amount of essential oil used in the mixture or, if you prefer fragrance free, leave them out.

*Helpful Hint- Because all people are different, reactions may not be the same for every person. Some essential oils might make your burn feel worse.  It’s best to avoid substituting citrus oils in this mixture because, according to WebMD, “Many citrus oils contain furocoumarins, which can cause chemical burns when exposed to the sun’s UV rays.” It’s also recommended to not apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin.

That’s it! A super simple recipe with a soothing fragrance.  *I really like to substitute lemongrass essential oil in this spray.  It is not considered phototoxic and smells like summer.

Essential Oils are perfect to make your own homemade cleaners and beauty products. I also keep oils handy to use in my diffusers. It’s nice to have unexpected company step into the house and remark, “It smells good in here! Did I interrupt your cleaning?”
