Is there a Doctor in the House?

This is a sponsored post with Mums the Word Network and Amwell. All opinions are my own.

I spend a lot of time in doctors’ offices. Having a chronically ill child with two rare diseases, we have seen specialists I had never heard of before! I’ve spent the last two trips with my daughter looking for urgent care, only to find their urgent care closed at 2 PM in the afternoon. Or how about the time my son got sick and needed to be taken to the doctor? That sounds like it wouldn’t be a problem, except my daughter had to make an emergency visit to one of her specialists and I had to cancel his appointment.  Bryan suggested we try Amwell, and call a doctor.  I was extremely skeptical and had questions. I knew what was wrong with my son (sinus infection), but would the doctor be able to diagnose this over the phone? Would the doctor prescribe the needed medications? I reluctantly agreed to try the service.

I downloaded the Amwell app to my phone and filled out our information so it would be accessible by the doctor.  I was given a list of doctors who were available, along with a short biography of each one, to find one I felt would be best for our family.  Not only do they have medical doctors, they have a section for diet and nutrition and a section for mental health.

My son was able to speak to a doctor, who was quick to diagnose the problem, prescribe medication and give him tips to get relief from his sore throat, ear pain and stuffy nose.  Because the doctors at Amwell are available 24/7, there’s no more late night visits to urgent care or having to be in pain all night before making an appointment at the doctor the next morning.

At $49, the co-pay is more than a regular office visit for us, but once I added up the cost of gas to drive to the doctor and the amount of time we spent sitting in the waiting room,  the convenience more than made up for the small difference in price.  If you would like to try Amwell with your family, use the coupon code MomsLoveAmwell and get your first visit free.

  1. This sounds great! We have a deductible so this would be very affordable for us.

  2. I have not tried Amwell, but I think this is a great way to get in contact with your doctor without the drama of going to the office. It’s such a pain.

  3. I keep hearing about this program and think it is a great thing to have available! I have three kids and it isn’t always worth a drive to the doctors, this is perfect!

  4. I see the potential for this and its huge. There are so many ways to use it and it’s oh so convenient. I’m def a proponent.

  5. I can imagine for moms of multiple kids this would be very convenient.
Do they send records to your family doctor after the visit?

  6. Wow, that’s an interesting service. I didn’t know they had video encounters now.

  7. Things like this are so nice to be able to use as an option. I’m sure there are parents of which have been in your situation before and would have loved to know about amwell.

  8. It’s so exciting how accessible medical advice is becoming! Internet medical advice can be so unreliable, sometimes you just need to talk to a real doctor!

  9. I think this is such a great idea, to much we seem to take to Dr Google and come up with completely the wrong thing, to have access to real professionals at any time is such a good idea.

  10. Neat. I have not heard of this service but it sounds amazing. A real life saver.
