Here’s an honest confession. I don’t spend a lot of time decorating for Halloween. It’s not that I don’t like Halloween, it’s because I can decorate once for fall and keep all those outdoor decorations up for two and a half months before decorating for Christmas. This year, after decorating the entrance of my house with a cute fall theme, I decided I wanted to decorate the patio and garden area behind our house. Since the two-year-olds are really into pumpkins and wanted to draw faces on all of them, I decided to go with a Halloween theme. I dug through my Halloween supplies and found this “Boo-tiful” Halloween Clothespin Wreath I made a few years ago. I decided, with a little updating, it would be good as new.
“Boo”tiful Halloween Clothes Pin Wreath
This wreath is so simple to make and, even better, is low cost too! You can find the materials you need at any craft store, dollar store, or thrift store. I picked up the mirror I used as a backdrop at a thrift store for less than $5.00. After Halloween, I plan to paint it and repurpose it into an architectural element in my garden. That’s a lot of bang for my buck.
Before you begin, gather these supplies:
*A wire wreath frame
*2 packages of clothespins
*Black spray paint
*glue or epoxy
*plastic spiders
*Halloween themed bow
*wooden letters
*mirror, optional
Step 1: Spray paint the clothespin with black paint and allow them to dry. You may have to spray paint them twice. Be sure to paint the sides and inside the tops of the clothespin. Tip: Do not use enamel paint! It takes forever to dry and gets all over hands and clothing.
Step 2: Clip the clothespin to the wire wreath base.
Step 3: If you are handy at making bows, you can make a bow and attach it to the bottom of the wreath. I am not. I purchased a pre-made bow that could be tied onto the wreath. It covered up the two places where the wireframe could be seen through the clothespins. Tip: If you have a Dollar Tree in your area, you can find most of the supplies there.
Step 4: Using hot glue, epoxy, or craft glue, attach the spiders to the wreath. I used glittery orange spiders for their contrasting color.
Step 5: Hot glue wooden letters onto the wreath to spell “BOO.” After all, it is a “Boo” tiful Halloween Clothespin Wreath! I painted 3-inch wooden letters with white craft paint, but you can save time by purchasing white letters.
Step 6: Once the letters are dry, glue the letters onto the top of the wreath.
Step 7: Attach a hook to the back of the wreath for hanging. I also attached my wreath to a black mirror, but that’s completely optional.
Printable Instructions:
- 1 8 inch wire wreath frame (or any size you prefer)
- 2 packages clothespins ( I used 60 clothes pins)
- 1 premade bow (or one spool of ribbon to make a bow)
- 2 spiders or decorations of your choice–ghosts would be cute too
- 1 can of black spray paint
- Wooden letters to spell out boo
- white paint, if you do not purchase prepainted white letters
- craft glue, hot glue, or epoxy
- **Mirror -optional
- Spray paint the clothespins black and allow them to dry. This could take two coats.
- Attach the clothespins to the wreath. I just clipped them into place.
- Attach the bow to the bottom of the wreath.
- Glue spiders or other decorations onto the wreath.
- Paint letters with white paint and allow to dry.
- Glue letters onto the top of the wreath.
- Add a hook or hanger to the back of the wreath.
*Where to Purchase Supplies*
If you are having some trouble finding the supplies, I found the wire wreath base in the floral section at Michaels. I picked up the premade bow and letters there too.
The spray paint, spiders, and clothespins came from The Dollar Tree. In total, my wreath cost around ten dollars to make. The mirror, which my kids deemed “hideous” until I used it with the wreath, was extra. As I’m planning on repurposing it later to look like a mirror I saw on a garden tour, I don’t factor that in as part of the cost.
I thought my wreath was adorable. I think I might make Thanksgiving and Christmas clothespin wreaths next. The total project took around 20 minutes to put together if you don’t count the time it takes for the paint to dry.
What do you think of my Boo-ti-ful Halloween Clothespin wreath? What Halloween crafts are you making this year?
Now that is creepy cool and doesn’t look expensive to make. I’ll have to let the grandkids help me make some for their homes and mine.
I love this idea. I like the fact that you used clothes pins! Now how creative is that!
That wreath is CUTISIMO! Not only cute, but easy enough for The Grands to help make. Gracias for the tutorial.
That turned out great! I love the idea of using clothespins too. This looks so neat! I’m going to have to make my own now. I love homemade wreaths.
What a cute and simple craft. I love Halloween. We have not decorated much this year but I bet my kids would want to help make this.
I have clothes pin and a Black Can of Spray Paint my mother in law gave me son for any projects he was working on. So now that I know we can use clothespins in crafts I am off to make me a Wreath for our front door. As well as one for my sister and mother in law.
The Bootiful Halloween Clothespin wreath really looks so ‘bootiful’. Really like the way you have made use of simple items in a creative way with fabulous results.
I love this so much! It is adorable and would be a great Halloween craft, thank you for the idea!
That looks simple, yet very classy! I may have to try making one with my daughter before Halloween rolls around. If not, maybe we can put a different spin on it and try one for Thanksgiving.
You did a great job on that wreath! It is adorable for Halloween. Your directions are easy to follow, too.

What a cute Halloween DIY. I have a Halloween themed wreath that we have put up for the last 3-4 years. Much of Halloween DIY is fun recipes that the kids and I bake for the classroom parties.
