There’s something about the holidays that makes me want to bake. It’s not good for my waistline, but all of our friends and family like to receive the treats. I was flipping through a recent copy of Women’s World magazine when a recipe for Candy Bar Sugar Cookies caught my eye. Their recipe called for Butterfinger candy bars, which I didn’t have. What I did have were toffee chips. I’m a huge fan of toffee, but somehow only get it during the holidays. “This is the stuff,” I thought, and decided to make a version of their recipe and call it the Chocolate Chunk Toffee Sugar Cookies recipe.
How to Make Chocolate Chunk Toffee Sugar Cookies
I needed chocolate chunks so I checked our candy basket. We were out and I was not making a special trip to the store. I found Red & Green Hershey chocolate pieces so I decided to use them instead. They worked perfectly and added a festive touch. I’m sure M&Ms would work as well. Or vary the color of the chocolates and these cookies could be made for any season or holiday. Of course, these would be delicious with large milk or white chocolate chunks as well.
Printable Recipe
- 2 cups (16 ounces) All Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoon EACH baking powder and Vanilla Flavoring
- 1/2 teaspoon EACH: baking soda and salt
- 1/2 cup (4 ounces) shortening
- 1/4 cup (2 ounces) Butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (4 ounces) packed brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 12 ounces ( 1 1/2 cups) chocolate chunks
- 1 cup toffee bits
Helpful hint: Be sure to use butter! Margarine will change the texture and cause them to spread. If you prefer a chewy cookie, remove the cookies from the oven when they are still soft. Allow them to cool completely on the tray before removing as they have a tendency to crumble if not completely cooled.
These cookies turned out so well! Soft and chewy, chocolately, and delicious. I offered my son a cookie to eat because it was broken and I couldn’t photograph it. I believe he thought he was paying me a compliment when he said, “May all your cookies be broken!”
What is your favorite dessert you only have during the holidays?
