Creepy Spider Cakes Recipe

This recipe is so easy. It only has a few ingredients and is semi-homemade, making it one of those go-to recipes you can make when you’re in a hurry. Like the times your child tells you at 10 PM they need a treat for school the next day. I adapted the original recipe I found in a Taste of Home magazine several years ago to make it even easier.

Here’s what you need to make them:

1 package (18-1/4 ounces) chocolate fudge cake mix
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 egg
1 can (16 ounces) chocolate frosting
Shoestring black licorice, cut into 1-1/2 inch pieces
1/4 cup red-hot candies

Here’s how to make them:

1. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, butter, and an egg. The dough will be stiff.
2. Place the dough into a 9″ by 9″ pan sprayed with cooking spray.
3. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until the mixture is set.
4. Allow the mixture to cool.
5. Using a biscuit cutter, cut circles from the cake. Set circles on a wire rack.
6. Melt chocolate frosting in the microwave for approximately 30 seconds. Stir until smooth.
7. Pour 2 to 3 tablespoons of melted frosting over each circle. Allow frosting to dry.
8. Place four licorice pieces on each side of cookies for spider legs.
9. For eyes, use a small dab of frosting to attach two red-hot candies to the top of the spider.
