Today, Brittany is sharing her experiences on an impromptu weekend trip she took to At Cumberland Falls Bed and Breakfast Inn to Asheville, North Carolina, which she paid for herself.
Justin and I have been wanting to go to a bed and breakfast for years. Ever since his parents moved to Pennsylvania and we saw the cute exteriors of the bed and breakfasts in all the tiny Amish towns. Somehow, we haven’t had the chance until now.
When we had a little bit of free time pop up unexpectedly before the busiest season of our year, we decided to grab life by the horns and book an impromptu vacation. After considering a couple of nearby locations, we picked Asheville, North Carolina, because Justin had never been. After reading reviews of almost all the hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and hostels throughout Asheville, we made a decision: Cumberland Falls Bed and Breakfast. The room we wanted was actually booked for this weekend, so we booked the room across the hall from it. It was an amazing decision.
We got there 20 minutes before we were supposed to check in, but ran into Gary and Patti (the innkeepers) relative, who contacted someone and had us let into the house almost immediately. We were given a guided tour of the common areas, which included a refrigerator with beverages available on an honor system, a hot bar with a variety of teas and coffee, a sitting room with books and CDs, and a little cabinet filled with movies to take up to your room and watch. I was enamored with the breakfast spaces, especially the sunroom, and told Justin we had to arrive early for breakfast the next morning- served promptly at 9 am- so we could stake out a seat in the sunroom.
When we got to the room, we were a little awe-struck. The Day Dream room, which we picked out, is located on the top floor of the house, which was built in the 1800s! There are 6 rooms in the house, and one is located on the bottom floor. Three are located on the second floor, and two are located on the top floor. If you’re not very tall or you don’t mind ducking, I highly recommend the top floor rooms. They have skylights, which are awesome for both natural light and for stargazing. One night it rained, and it was neat seeing the rain against the skylights. Pictures don’t do any of the rooms justice.
One of the things that made us select this bed and breakfast was the afternoon treats. Not only do you get breakfast, they have cute little baked goods in the afternoon! My gluten free treats were waiting in the room both days, and it was worth the $7 per day extra fee for special diets.
The beds were comfy, the Jacuzzi was awesome, and I loved the little reading/futon nook in our room. But while we’re still thinking about food, let’s look at the breakfasts:
The breakfast is three courses. Coffee is available when you walk downstairs, and you simply grab a seat at one of the two tables (I highly recommend the sunroom, where we ate both mornings) and wait to be served.
Y’all. You won’t need lunch, I assure you. The first course is muffins, a different flavor every morning. Even my gluten free muffins were fluffy, moist, and amazing. That’s hard to say for gluten free. Next is a fruit course, featuring options like the poached lavender pear with blackberries and raspberries. (This was my favorite fruit course of the two days we were there.) Next is the main dish. The first day was wonderful Belgian waffles, and the next morning was a twist on eggs Florentine with summer squash instead of spinach. Both main courses were delicious, but the potatoes and dipping sauce that came with the eggs really stole the show.
The koi pond was possibly Justin’s favorite part of the whole experience. The conversation with Patti, Gary, and the two couples we met while we were visiting was possibly mine. (One of the couples we met ownedSugar Creek Brewing in Charlotte, NC. How cool is that?)
A few words of advice: the house is very old, so sound carries a bit. If you want a quieter experience, stay at the top of the house, where you can’t hear people walking around on top of you. However, if you’re very tall, a stay at the top of the house will involve a good bit of ducking, or forgetting to duck and bumping your head. I thought it was worth it, but maybe you won’t.
All in all, it was an awesome experience and Justin and I can’t wait to go back.
I’ve never been to a Bed & Breakfast. This place looks lovely. I really like that little bridge over the pond.
