De Leon Springs State Park

A Little History:

First inhabited by the Mayaca, a Native American tribe, the area was named Acuera (or “healing waters”). The Mayacan shell mounds can still be found in the park. In the early 1800s, the area began its transformation into sugar and cotton plantations. By the 1880s the railroad arrived, bringing wealthy tourists and a new name, “De Leon Springs.”

What to Do:

Visitors Center– Start your day with an in-depth history of the area. You’ll begin 6000 years ago with the Mayaca Indians and end during the tourist era in the 1960s before the park was acquired by the state. Don’t miss the photos (and home movie) of the water-skiing elephant who used to reside on the property. Children have their own interactive exhibits, including a touch table.

Hiking- Stroll along the ½ mile level, wheelchair-accessible interpretive path to see native plants and trees, including a 600-year old cypress. Want a longer trek? Try the 4-mile Wild Persimmon Trail that winds through the adjacent 22,000-acre Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Preserve. Who knows? You might see black bears, wild boars, or bald eagles, among other species. A bird list is available from the park station.

Boat Tours-Available on the hour from 10 AM until 1 PM, Captain Frank hosts a 50-minute eco/history tour through the Spring Run. This is a great opportunity to see native wildlife, including alligators.

Fishing-Grab a rod and reel and head to one of the fishing piers or the Spring Run and attempt to catch some of the abundant supply of fish residing in the warm waters. Note: A valid Florida fishing license is required.

Paddling- Kayak or canoe through the spring run into the Woodruff National Wildlife preserve or into the St. Johns River. Bring your own gear or rent one on-site. The park is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife trail so keep your eyes peeled for sightings of wildlife.

Swimming & Snorkeling- Looking for the perfect place to swim? Look no further! The crystal-clear swimming area is heated by the springs and remains a pleasant 72 degrees year-round. Feeling adventurous? Grab your scuba gear and take a free-dive into the spring cave. Be aware that depths can change suddenly and range from 18 inches to 30 feet.

Picnic Area & Playground– Bring your lunch or food to prepare on one of the available grills. Tables are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are located in the shade.

Brush Up on Your History-Stop by the interpretive signs and kiosks around the park to learn more about the remains of shell mounds, see parts from a long-ago sugar mill, along with walls, gates, and, sadly, a nonworking fountain of youth from the tourist attraction era.

Where to Eat:

The Old Spanish Sugar Mill Grill and Griddle House -Housed inside a former sugar mill, this restaurant is one of the most popular in the state. The building is over 100 years old and although the wheel no longer turns proudly outside, you’ll love the cozy interior. Inside you’ll find a totally different take on traditional dining. Their take on “all you can eat pancakes” is simple. A server brings out two pitchers of batter-one made of 5 stone-ground flours and one “regular” batter. Along with the batter, you can order mix-ins like chocolate chips or bananas. Here’s the kicker-you can prepare your own pancakes on the griddle located in the center of the table!

Don’t fancy preparing your own food? No problem! They have a menu of breakfast and lunch items they’ll whip up and bring to the table. Be sure to arrive early-the wait time for a table can be up to 2 hours. Have allergies? Gluten-free and Vegan pancake batter is available for a small additional charge.

After breakfast, visit the area behind the restaurant for a glimpse of seasonal gardens featuring crops from the plantation and Native American area or wander over behind the Ranger’s Station to visit the Butterfly Garden.
