Dial into Giving

Back to School shopping is over and it’s not quite time for the Holidays. Those are the peak seasons for donating to charities in our area. It’s wonderful that so many people donate generously during these times but what happens during the rest of the year? Our county has had a staggering unemployment rate and many people have been laid off from work. Charities are serving more people than ever and less of us are able to give. When I heard Christ’s Chapel, an organization that serves 300 different needy families per month, needed supplies I wanted to do something. I decided to recruit my family and friends and organize a simple service project.

I was inspired by Champions for Kids who shares the staggering fact that 16.8 million children in America go to school cold, hungry and without the resources they need to thrive. Their goal is to mobilize 20 million people to action by 2020. I’m hoping to help motivate the people I know by sharing how easy it is to donate something each month, no matter how small. Think it’s difficult to donate? I’ve included a simple, low cost idea. Clip a coupon for a toiletry item and pair it with a sale. I’ve purchased toothpaste using this method and paid only a quarter a tube! For the $1 I could have spent on a value meal hamburger, I save myself some calories and donate four tubes of toothpaste to someone in need.

Most people think of food when they are inspired to donate. Of course everyone needs food, but what about other basic necessities like soap, toothpaste or deodorant? Because these donations were needed but rarely given, I decided to ask everyone to “Dial into Giving.” The name of this project caused me to giggle. I could purchase Dial Soaps and other toiletries at my local Walmart  to start our project. You can see my shopping trip here.
