DIY Lampstand Bird Bath

There’s a story (of course!) behind this DIY Lampstand Bird Bath. I’m a sucker for anything garden-related. Several years ago, after looking through tons of Southern Living, Country Living, and Better Homes and Gardens magazines, I decided I wanted an “outdoor space.” A place where I could sit outside and relax or entertain friends. My first attempt at an outdoor room involved a canopy gazebo. Naturally, we had the wettest summer in recorded history. The massive amount of rain ripped the canopy off and collapsed the metal poles.

This post has been updated for 2021.

Next was the great patio remodel. I started the project and my family immediately went into health crisis mode, causing me to abandon the projects. I finally completed the outdoor space I dreamed of for so long. Friends, neighbors, and relatives completed me on my beautiful gardens and outdoor seating areas.

This year, as I am completing my Master Gardener Certification and had 20 rose bushes die from rose rosette disease, I decided to completely redo the patio and outdoor living space. The problem with redoing all of this? Money. I know the cost involved with building raised garden beds, redoing the concrete, making cute pathways, and, of course, flowers. I decided we would do a lot of the work ourselves and make our own garden art.

Read this as: I like to have the men in our family do the heavy lifting and hauling while I do the decor, painting, concrete work, and other outdoor space activities. This is one of the first thrifty projects I made; a DIY Bird Feeder made from an Old Lamp Stand.

This is an easy way to attract birds to your yard.

DIY Lampstand Bird Bath

The supplies needed were minimal. I purchased a metal lamp stand at the thrift store for $3.99 and a 99 cent blue glass plate with silver swirly patterns that caught my eye. I cut the cord from the bottom of the lamp, unscrewed the top, and removed the wiring. I also removed the switch that turned on the lamp and the piece that balances the light shade.

Next, I painted it with a coat of granite textured paint and allowed it to dry. I used strong outdoor glue to attach the plate to the top of the lampstand. I think it turned out great!

Materials Needed To Make The Bird Bath

  • old lampstand base of your choice– Note: tall and skinny lampstands make good bases
  • screwdriver
  • scissors
  • outdoor spray paint- good choices include Krylon and Rustoleum
  • 8 or 9 inch plate of your choice
  • outdoor glue- good choices include E6000 or GE Silicone II sealant

Step by Step Instructions

  • Clean and dry the lampstand and plate before beginning the project.
  • Cut and remove the cord from the bottom of the lampstand. Unscrew the top of the lampstand and remove the wiring and piece with the switch that turns the lamp on.
  • Paint the lampstand with the outdoor paint of your choice. Allow the lampstand to dry.
  • Apply outdoor glue to the bottom of the plate and the top of the lampstand. Attach the plate to the lampstand. Allow the glue to dry before use.

I think the lampstand birdbath is adorable. Plus, it only cost around $5 to make and took approximately fifteen minutes of crafting time. Think of all the money I saved that can be used on other patio projects! I’m sure Bryan will be thrilled.

Tune in this summer as we redo the patio and outdoor living area. I’ll be featuring lots of crafts from our Spring and Summer Patio Project along with all sorts of design inspiration. What outdoor projects are you planning this year? I’d love to hear about them!
