I am determined this will be the year I will finish my patio project. I imagine evenings spent sitting outside, relaxing with an ice cold drink. Unfortunately, one thing I have discovered about remodeling is the expense. I had a preset budget and whenever I buy materials, it seems we need twice as much as originally planned, which equals twice the expense. I wanted some fun décor for my patio, but with the pricey remodel, decided to scour thrift stores, craigslist and other places for ideas I could upcycle. My idea of patio décor is eclectic. I like English country gardens, a funky Caribbean vibe and images from Southern Living Magazine. Trying to combine all of these ideas without looking weird has been a challenge, but I’m up for it! I think this project using old window frames combined all the looks I wanted.
I based my design on this pinterest pin. I found my old window in my Grandmother’s barn. Actually, I found a stack of old windows because the house has been redone with new energy efficient windows. Score for me! I dragged a bunch of them home for different projects. First, I suggest spraying them for termites just in case. After I let them dry, I coated them with a wood protector sealant. I found several cool Caribbean colors of Rustoleum spray paint and painted the frames. I also sprayed a light coating of paint on the glass.
When the paint dried, I applied a vinyl wall decal to the window. Helpful hint: Be sure to clean the glass before applying the decal. I found my wall decal on clearance at JoAnn’s Craft Store for $3.97, so be sure to check out the clearance sections of craft stores! There’s no telling what you might find that you absolutely can’t live without. (Or so I tell Bryan after I purchase it. Ha!)
So far, I’ve made three windows all in different Caribbean colors and using different vinyl wall décor. Now to get them hung on the walls! That’s a project for another day. I love knowing I have my Grandmother’s windows updated into chic décor. The saving lots of money is good too!
What DIY projects are you doing this summer?
