EPIC movie adventures and Tyson

cbias, EPIC the movie
Our family had been looking forward to seeing EPIC the movie, produced by the creators of Ice Age and Rio. The nine, now 10, year old had shown me several commercials and told me the premier in theaters around the country was May 24th. Knowing  this was his 10th birthday, I promised I would take him to the movies as part of his present. I was a little surprised when the older kids expressed interest, but agreed they could attend the celebration with us. Because the movie was scheduled to begin at 4:40 PM, I knew we needed a quick dinner before heading to the theater. Our Tyson chicken nuggets I’d purchased at Sam’s Club, served with a variety of dipping sauces, and Del Monte Green beans, prepared with the addition of some Greek Seasoning, had dinner on the table in a snap.

Epic 1

We arrived at the theater in time to take a quick snapshot with the movie poster outside the theater. The kids had a fun time posing and I had to remind them to look “serious.” My reprimands did not work. EPIC is also available in 3D, which I am sure would be awesome, but we decided to attend the regular screening. We found our seats and waited impatiently for the movie to begin. The previews lasted for several minutes, until the 10 year old was squirming and asking me, “How much longer until the movie begins?” Once the movie began, I heard no more complaints from any of the kids.

EPIC Premier

EPIC has two stories, both intertwined. Mary Katherine, now a teenager known as M.K., arrives to live with her dad after her mother’s death. Her father has ruined his career and his marriage by devoting his life to attempting to find an advanced society of little people in the forest. He is estranged from M.K. and neither of them are sure how to reconnect. Meanwhile, in the forest, for the first time in 100 years, a full moon is occurring on the summer solistice. Queen Tara knows today is the only day she can find an heir. Her loyal military commander, Ronan, warns her not to embark on her mission due to a breach in their borders by the Boggins, an evil group, led by King Mandrake, who want to spread his kingdom of rot . Due to a twist of fate, Queen Tara is killed when the Boggins attack.  She draws M.K. into her kingdom with a command to deliver the future heir to the wise scroll keeper. M.K reluctantly begins her journey with the help of Ronan and his foster son, Nob. I won’t give away any juicy details, but there was plenty of action as the heroes risk everything to save the heir and the story led to  a satisfying conclusion.

Epic2

The film had plenty of characters to add an element of humor and keep the movie from becoming too serious.  Mub and Grub, a snail and a slug commissioned to keep the heir moist, an essential element for survival, and Ozzie, the three legged pug provided plenty of comic relief. All four kids, ranging in age from 10 to 20, told me they enjoyed the movie. I sneaked peeks to see them laughing or gripping the seats in excitement throughout the film. All in all it made an EPIC birthday adventure and a fun family evening.

Do you have any healthy meal solutions for  family meals prepared in a hurry? Have you seen EPIC yet? What did you think? Want a chance to win tickets to see EPIC? T
