Tis the season for snow and ice in many parts of the country. With that in mind I found the cutest craft idea for a “frosted” vase that would be perfect for a Christmas centerpiece and could easily be adapted to a winter centerpiece. If you have tried any of my previous crafts you know I like simple, uncomplicated crafts. I want cute results without having to spend an arm and a leg or waste my entire day trying to make the craft. The kids can help with the making of this craft, but, if they are as accident prone as my children, you will want to do the hot wax portion yourself.
Here’s what you need to make the craft:
4 white tea candles or 1 white taper candle
double boiler with a pan
spoon
one (16 ounce) bag of peppermint candies
one or two red taper candles
clear vase
Begin by removing the candle from the tea candle shell or breaking the taper candle into pieces. Place the candles in the top portion of a double boiler pan and heat on low heat until the candle is melted. Important Note! Do not add the wax directly to a saucepan and melt it unless you want a big, sticky mess that is hard to clean. Drizzle melted wax around the vase in a circular pattern. Set aside and allow to dry. Be sure to add very warm tap water to the vase while the candle wax is melting and drain the water before drizzling the wax to prevent the vase from cracking. Fill the vase with the peppermint candies and add the red taper candle to the middle. I didn’t plan to light my candle, only use it as a display, but if you do, let the kids unwrap the peppermints before adding them to the vase. It’s a good project to do when they complain they are bored over Christmas vacation.
This project can be adapted by adding colored Christmas ornaments or changed to a winter theme by adding pine cones. I purchased all of the supplies for my project at The Dollar Tree, which has a wide selection of name brand items for only $1. The entire project, including the vase, candies and candles cost me $3.00. If you have a large table you can make an entire centerpiece, using three of these candle holders, surrounded by some greenery, for less than $10. No one has to know you didn’t spend big bucks this season and that is the way I like it.
What projects do you make using supplies from The Dollar Tree?
