Furnish Your Home Without Breaking The Bank

I got married when I was still a starving college student. I had big dreams for furnishing my (small) home. I wanted pricey Victorian antiques and had a pasteboard budget. My wish list was quickly adapted. If you have a pasteboard budget too, here are some of my favorite tips for saving money without sacrificing style.

1. Ask family and friends.
The Victorian bedroom suite I wanted was over $5000. Ouch. Instead, I purchased a reproduction bed. Then, I asked around to find out if anyone had the matching dresser and other pieces. Several people contacted me to let me know they had a piece gathering dust in an attic or shed they no longer wanted. I also found myself in possession of an 1850’s bed my aunt wanted out of her house. *One warning about antique beds—they are sized differently than modern beds. Sometimes mattresses will not fit.

2. Check out “used” furniture stores.
These stores have the occasional antique piece mixed in with their other furniture for a fraction of the cost an antiques dealer would charge. Don’t like antiques? They usually have a nice selection of contemporary or eclectic furniture.

3. Know your limitations.
If the used furniture is in poor condition or needs refinishing, ask yourself if you are able to repair or refinish the furniture. Factor in the cost for professional repairs before purchasing. It’s not bargain if you can’t use it.

4. Only purchase what you love.
Over the years I’ve been offered all sorts of antique furniture from people who just don’t want it in their home. If it’s not a piece I am enamored of, I decline their offer, knowing I will not be happy having to see the piece every day.

5. Buy Unfinished.
When I wanted an armoire for storing our TV and electronics, I purchased an unfinished piece for much less than the original purchase price. Plus, I was able to use the finish I needed to match our other furniture.

  3. I’ve bought unfinished furniture before but I’ve had better luck with re-finishing. Must be an issue between my mind’s eye and reality 🙂

  4. We are in the process of refurnishing all the bedrooms. I’ve done great by taking the time to shop around. I wish I had the time for unfinished pieces it would open up a lot more.
