Fuzzy Navel Smoothie Mocktail Recipe

“Hey, mom, I invited a friend to dinner tonight. She’s vegan.” At one time those words would have filled me with dread. What could I make that everyone in the family and our guests would enjoy? Now, thanks to the myriad of food allergies I’ve had to cook for, it’s no problem. Dairy, wheat, soy, nuts, almost everything but meat, was off the table for a while.

Although the 4-year-old has outgrown most of her allergies I still have to prepare gluten-free, dairy-free dishes on a regular basis for other family members with food allergies. This refreshing four-ingredient Fuzzy Navel Smoothie Mocktail Recipe was created to meet these allergies. After one sip the entire family clamored to try it. It’s even a hit with our vegan friends. Let the mocktails flow!

Fuzzy Navel Smoothie Mocktail Recipe

This recipe is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and takes around five minutes of preparation time. You can prepare the smoothie in several ways.

Smoothie Preparation Tips

  • If you prefer a refreshing juice drink, mix all the ingredients without using ice cubes.
  • Use ice cubes to prepare if you plan to drink the smoothie immediately.
  • To make a slush, spread the mixture in a shallow pan and freeze for an hour.

Substitutions

  • If you would like a vegan version, use agave instead of honey.
  • Use 2 fresh peeled and diced peaches or 1 (28-ounce) can of water-packed peach slices instead of the frozen peaches. If using a can of peaches, be sure to drain the water before using the peaches.
  • You can substitute other frozen fruits. Good choices are mangos, strawberries, or a blend of mixed fruit.
  • Adjust the honey or agave to taste.
  • Adjust the number of fruit slices used to give the smoothie the consistency you want.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups orange juice

  • 3 tablespoons honey or agave

  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups frozen peach slices

  • 1 large banana, peeled and cut into chunks

  • 10 ice cubes

Directions

  • Add the orange juice, peaches, honey or agave, and banana to a blender. Process for 15 to 20 seconds or until the mixture is smooth.
  • Add the ice cubes and process until blended. Serve immediately.
  • If not using ice cubes- place mixture into a shallow pan and freeze until slushie (approximately one hour.)

Freezing Instructions:

Did you know that you can freeze smoothies for up to two months? It’s true! All you need to do is pour the smoothie into a mason jar, seal it, and store it in the freezer.
Place the mason jar in the refrigerator overnight and you’ll have a thawed smoothie waiting for your breakfast.

Make-Ahead Smoothie Packs

Want to be able to whip up a smoothie whenever you like? Make-ahead smoothie packs are the answer! All you’ll need is:

  • pint-sized freezer bags
  • fruit of your choice

How to Make the Packs:

  • Add the peach slices, sliced banana, and honey or agave to the bag.
  • Seal the bag and place it into the freezer until ready to use.
  • When ready to use the pack, place the fruit mixture into the blender. Do not allow the fruit to thaw before adding it to the blender.
  • Pour the orange juice into the blender and process until the mixture is smooth.
  • Serve immediately.
