Getting Laid: Everything You Need to Know About Raising Chickens, Gardening and Preserving By Barb Webb

Growing up I spent a lot of time on my Grandmother’s farm. To be honest, I hated farm living and spend as much time as possible hiding in the woods with a book to avoid farm chores. My experience with chickens including a) staying away from them and b) yelling at the rooster who delighted in crowing under my window at 4 AM each morning. Then, bam, I married someone who grew up on a farm. Now the farm menagerie includes sheep, cows, horses, pigs, rabbits and of course, chickens. “When did we turn into Green Acres?” Bryan asked me. Because I knew absolutely nothing about chickens, I was thrilled when offered a chance to review my friend Barb Webb’s book, Getting Laid: Everything You Need to Know About Raising Chickens, Gardening and Preserving — with Over 100 Recipes.

Poor Barb has dealt with my Facebook messages, including, “Help! Are you there? Chicken Emergency!” (And, if I had Barb’s book at the time, I would have realized my chicken had eaten a poisonous plant while free ranging.)  I know what you are thinking, “Pam, I don’t raise chickens. How is this book for me?” The answer: If you have ever wanted to live a more sustainable lifestyle, this book shows you how in simple steps.

Sustainable living boasts no boundaries. You don’t need massive amounts of acreage or even a fenced-in backyard. We may not be 100 percent sustainable in our lifestyle, but we can become better in-tune with our environment and conscientious of our actions. Like all aspects of life, it’s about balance, finding ways to live a greener, cleaner life within the parameters of your current lifestyle.

Divided into ten chapters, the book walks you through sustainable living, choosing and taking care of chickens, preparing artisan breads, sweets and other mouth watering recipes, gardening, composting, DIY scrubs and more. Barb’s down to earth prose and easy to follow instructions have made my sustainable living journey much easier. You can purchase your own copy, for Kindle or in paperback, on Amazon.

  4. I actually just bought this book, but I haven’t dived into yet. We’re looking at land and farms… Eeek. I’m pretty stoked about that… Ask me a year ago if I would have been looking at farmhouses and I would have told you, that you’re crazy… Isn’t it funny how life changes?! Anyway. I’m so glad you wrote this review and I’m excited to read this book now because of it. 🙂
