Gifted: The Movie

Family ties are important. It doesn’t matter if you’re a mom, dad, grandparent, son, daughter, niece, nephew, aunt or uncle, or even if you are not related but claimed as a member of the family anyway, like my “spare daughter.” She’s my daughter’s BFF and has spent time at our house since she was eight years old.  Sometimes family can exasperate or annoy me, but I always love them.  When I see a movie about family ties that tugs at my heartstrings, like Gifted, which opened in theaters on April 7th,  I have to share it.

This is a partnered post with Gifted, but all opinions are my own.

Gifted is the story of a Frank Adler, played by Chris Evans, a single man raising a niece, Mary, played by Mckenna Grace, who happens to be a child prodigy, in a coastal town in Florida.  Frank wants Mary to have a normal childhood and school life, but his mother, Evelyn, played by Lindsay Duncan, has different ideas.  She has learned about Mary’s mathematical abilities and plans to separate Frank and Mary.  Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend.  Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.

Of course, there has to be wise counsel and a little romance.  Roberta, played by Octavia Spencer,  is Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Bonnie, played by Jenny Slate, is Mary’s teacher. Her concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle.

Chris Evans, when asked to describe the movie in three words, said “family, heartfelt and humor.” Adding, “I don’t know if it can be summed up in three words. There’s a lot going on.” In other words, be sure to bring those tissues with you when you go to the theater! Just the lines, “You wanted me before I was smart,” is enough to bring on the tears.
