There’s nothing that says Southern Comfort Food like deep fried, calorie laden cooking. I grew up with those foods and they hold memories of family get togethers and lazy summer days. I gave up deep frying foods long ago, but never outgrew the taste for them. My daughter, on the other hand, fondly remembers her pre-Celiac days of eating out at local family diners and enjoying onion rings. We were both at an impasse when we received a Bella 22 pound air fryer. The first thing Brittany asked when she say it was, “Can we make gluten free air fried onion rings?” No matter which recipe I suggested, she kept returning to the choice of onion rings. We made onion rings.
Gluten Free Air Fried Onion Rings Recipe
I combined several recipes to get the taste we wanted. The result is a faint hint of spice, a thinner batter , and the onion flavor shining through. Here’s what you’ll need to make the onion rings.
Ingredients:
onions, cut into rings
club soda, chilled
buttermilk
garlic powder
baking soda
salt & pepper
paprika
rice & all purpose gluten free flour
Directions:
Place the onions in cold buttermilk and allow to soak for 30 minutes to an hour. (The onions can soak longer if you have something else to do.)
Mix the garlic powder, baking soda, salt, pepper, paprika and flours together until blended.
Remove onions from buttermilk mixture and dip in chilled club soda and then roll in flour mixture until coated.
Cook in Air Fryer until the onion rings are soft on the outside and the batter is crisp on the outside. (About 15 minutes.)
Printable Recipe:
- 1 cup EACH Rice Flour & Gluten Free All Purpose Flour
- 1/4 teaspoon EACH salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon EACH garlic powder, baking soda & paprika
- 1 1/2 cups club soda, chilled
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 large onions, cut into rings
- Place onions in buttermilk. Allow to chill for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Mix flours, salt, pepper, garlic powder, baking soda and paprika together. Remove onions from buttermilk. Dip into club soda and then into flour mixture.
- Place in air fryer and fry 15-20 minutes until done.
Our onion rings were so good. I’m ready to cook all those indulgent Southern and Holidays recipes again with the help of my Bella 2.2 lb Air Fryer. Here’s some of the benefits of our air fryer:
*Little or no oil is needed for the cooking process, making this a healthier alternative to the traditional deep frying. (Result: I can sometimes have those delicious fried goodies again that I’ve missed so much.)
*No unpleasant oil odor and much less smell and steam than a traditional fryer. Have you ever gone into someone’s house or a store after they’ve fried food and smelled the burnt oil smell? There’s a grocery store in our area I won’t visit because I leave smelling like oily fried chicken! Or, and this was big in our family, attended a fish fry where the odor lingered for days? This doesn’t happen with this fryer!
*Fryer has a 4.0L cooking area. You’re not going to be able to cook everything you need for a large party at once, but it makes a nice sized batch.
*The Fryer is not too loud. I thought it sounded about as loud as a fan.
*Compact enough to fit into a cabinet. A plus for those of us with limited cabinet space.
The Bella Air Fryer is available at JCPenny this fall for a MSRP of $99.99. Do you use an air fryer? What are your favorite tips and recipes?
with no mist of oil all those poor onion rings will be is dried up and covered in powder
These are perfect appetizers! Definitely trying this for our next holiday party!

I have been known to fry up some okra every now and then and while I love the taste, it pains me to know how unhealthy it is for me. Plus, it’s messy and I hate discarding all that used oil! I wonder how the air fryer would do with okra? This may go on the Christmas list.
I think it would work well with okra. We’ve made sweet potato fries and they turned out delicious!
