It’s fall and we are in the swing of tailgating! “I plan on doing lots of tailgating,” my son exclaimed. His college is an SEC school and tailgating is a BIG DEAL. These people are serious about their tailgating parties. Parents, Alumi and Fans arrive a day early to pick out the prime spots on campus. If I attend a game, I have to make a weekend trip as it’s a six hour trip both ways. That’s why I need easy tailgating recipes like this Dr. Pepper BBQ Chicken Wings recipe. It’s gluten free, has four ingredients ( five if you want to kick up the heat a notch,) and can be prepared in the crock pot to keep it warm.
How to make Dr. Pepper BBQ Chicken Wings
Ingredients You’ll Need:
*chicken wings (I used four pounds.) Tip: You can remove the skin on the wings or leave it on, whichever you prefer. If you are like me, it’s annoying to pull off the skin.
*bar-b-que sauce, in your favorite flavor You can purchase a bottle or make your own. My favorite type to use in the recipe is Honey BBQ.
*one medium onion, finely chopped
*one bottle of Dr Pepper (or substitute your favorite cola)
*hot wing sauce, optional, for spicier wings .
Directions:
Step 1: Stir the bar-b-que sauce, cola and wing sauce (if using) together in a medium sized bowl until blended.
Step 2: Stir in the onions.
Step 3: Place the chicken wings in a large bowl and add the sauce. Blend together until wings are coated.
Step 4: Place the wings in a crock pot on high for four hours. Voila! Delicious, no fuss wings.
Tips: The wings can also be prepared in advance and frozen. To freeze the wings; follow the steps above for mixing the wings. After the wings are mixed , place them into a large plastic freezer bag. To prepare: Remove the wings from the plastic freezer bag and defrost in a microwave for 10 minutes. Then, prepare the wings in the crockpot as directed above.
