Good Eats in Downtown Greenwood

During my stay in Greenwood, I was able to try these restaurants and found they lived up to the expectations I was given. Try any of the restaurants and you won’t walk away hungry or disappointed!
*1. T. W. Boon’s– Located at 405 Main Street,  this family owned restaurant is  approximately a two to three-minute walk if you’re staying at the Inn on the Square.  We visited on a Friday night and were seated and served quickly. The server was happy to provide suggestions when we asked for the most popular options.  I tried the  Blackened Shrimp skewers, served on a bed of rice, and served with a side of my choice, and a choice of salad or soup of the day.  I had the salad and my friend chose the soup, a delicious creamy Shrimp bisque. The prices are reasonable-the most expensive entree is $12.99 for the Shrimp and Grits- and each entree contains plenty of food.  There’s live entertainment on the weekends too. They’re open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM and closed on Sundays.

*2. The  Mill House– Located on a side street of downtown Greenwood, this place is hopping! Known as a home of “brick oven pizza and Good Times brewing,” we visited on a Saturday and the restaurant was packed. We were asked if we minded waiting, and although they told us there was a 20 minute maximum wait time during our visit, we were seated much sooner. Our waitress was helpful, answering our questions on food allergies, and making sure our to-go order for later arrived promptly before we finished our meal. I chose the classic Spaghetti and Meatballs, a heaping mound of spaghetti with a rustic marinara sauce topped with juicy meatballs and served with thick, crusty French bread.

Another dish I sampled was the Antipasto Salad.  If you think salad isn’t filling you haven’t tried this one! It’s stuffed with 3 types of meat; ham, salami, and pepperoni, and topped with an array of veggies including grape tomatoes, white onions, green bell peppers, cucumber, black olives,  and banana peppers, then a mound of feta or fresh mozzarella cheese. It’s a hearty, satisfying dinner that’s easily enough for two.  You can find the Mill House at 237 Maxwell Avenue.  They’re open every day and their hours are Monday through Thursday from 11am-10pm, Friday and Saturday until 11 PM, and they serve a Sunday Brunch from 11 am until 2 pm before resuming their regular menu until 10 pm. This restaurant is a locally owned family business and is a short walk from The Inn on the Square.

*3. The Carriage House-Breakfast at the Carriage House Restaurant, which is located inside The Inn on the Square, is served daily from 6:30 am until 10 am and it is delicious.  The menu includes a choice of four of the following items: Pancakes, French Toast, Corned Beef Hash, Eggs (prepared anyway), Fresh Fruit, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Sausage, and Sausage Gravy, along with either biscuits or toast. Drink choices include either coffee, tea, and orange juice.  Breakfast is included in the price of the room but is also open to the public for a charge of $10.  During my stay at the Inn, I tried as many items on the breakfast menu as I could. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the Brioche French toast was so good it made me sad I couldn’t eat all of it.  Expect large portions with the meal. You won’t leave hungry. They also serve dinner from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday, and a Sunday Brunch from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

*4. The Fox and The Hound-also located inside The Inn on the Square, features a lounge menu available every night. I dined at The Fox and Hound on a Sunday night, trying the Ribeye Steak sandwich, served with a hefty portion of house fries and a pickle.  The sandwich was delicious and the portions were large enough that I saved half of my sandwich for another meal. The bartender went above and beyond, patiently answering questions about menu items and allergy restrictions. When he didn’t know an answer, he checked with the chef. Be sure to check out their specials including “Saxy Wednesdays” with a guest saxophonist performs from 6-9 PM and special drink prices.  The Inn on the Square is located at 104 Court Avenue East in downtown Greenwood.

Other Restaurants That Were Recommended

These were recommended by everyone I asked, but I didn’t get a chance to try them due to their hours and scheduling conflicts, but I definitely tried to visit!
*5. Southern Soul on Main– Located at 312 Main Street, this restaurant is in the heart of downtown and is a locally owned family business. While I was unable to visit, a friend of mine had lunch here during our visit and said it was “great tasting classic Southern Comfort food.”  People brag about the peach cobbler, collard greens, and pork chops, including my friend, who insisted she wished she had their recipe for collard greens. The prices are very reasonable, with a meat and two vegetable plate plus a drink for $8.95.  With a variety of comfort food options like Southern Soul Fried Chicken or Country Fried Steak, you’ll definitely get a taste of the South.  Don’t want a big lunch? Try one of their sandwiches or burgers. They’re conveniently located at 312 Main Street from 11 AM until 8 PM.

*6. Kicker’s- This restaurant is said to be the “go to” place in downtown Greenwood for burgers.  And not just the usual burgers either, they feature items like the Asian Fish burger with green cabbage slaw or the Moroccan Turkey Burger. Other items include wraps, salads, and a selection of appetizers.  Located at 301 Maxwell Avenue, it’s an easy walk from the Inn on The Square.  They are closed Saturday and open from 11:00 AM until 2:30 PM Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday they are open for normal lunch hours and for dinner hours of 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM. Prices are reasonable and they’re family owned.

*7. Amish Oven – This is a classic meat and three diner with food prepared “just like grandma used to make.” Although not quite in walking distance, this was a seven-minute drive from downtown. The menu changes daily and features choices of meats, like pork chops or fried chicken, a choice of homestyle vegetables, and two Southern-style dessert choices. Lunch is served from 11:00 AM until 2:30 PM Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Dinner is served from 5:00 PM- 8:00 PM Thursday, and they are closed Saturday and Sunday. Prices seemed to be very reasonable and people kept telling me about the family-friendly atmosphere (they’re owned by a local family) and the great service. (Located at 803 Bypass 25 NE.)
