Summer is the perfect time for grilling. I’ve been utilizing our new George Foreman Removable Plate Grill when the weather is too nasty to grill outdoors. When people think of grilled foods they usually think of meat. For my submission to “The George Foreman Grill: Show Us Your Grill Skill Recipe Contest,” I wanted to create something unique and unusual. I came up with the idea of “Grilled Apple Cake.” The grilling process brings out the flavor in the apples, the dish is simple to prepare, and it looks amazing. It’s a great way to impress people with only a few ingredients.
Ingredients:
5 apples, cut into strips (I used a variety of green and yellow)
1 12 ounce frozen pound cake, thawed
1 8 ounce jar caramel topping
1 8 ounce jar whipped topping
1 quart ice cream
Directions:
Cut the pound cake into thin slices. ( I was able to make 24 slices from my pound cake. I made this in batches of four servings, using one piece of pound cake per serving. ) Lightly toast the pound cake, for approximately three minutes, using the George Foreman grill, if desired.
Cut the apples into thin strips and place on the George Foreman grill. Cook for five minutes or until soft and slightly charred.
Place 1/2 cup of apples on each slice of pound cake. Top the apples with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and add two tablespoons of whipped topping.
Pour the caramel topping into a microwave safe bowl and warm for 30 seconds. Drizzle the topping over the whipped cream/ice cream mixture. Serve immediately.
I want to add a few words about the George Foreman Removable Plate Grill. This grill is small enough to store in a cabinet but will cook up to five servings at once. The Removable plates have nonstick coating added so no oil or fat is needed, making the food healthier, leaner, and lower in fat. Of course my personal favorite is how the plates can be removed and placed in the dishwasher for cleaning. Nothing makes me happier than easy clean up in the kitchen. Unless it is having someone else cook for me!
What a great idea!
