Haunted Happenings in Harrodsburg, Kentucky

Ghost stories have always fascinated me.  As a child I remember sitting around campfires at camp, listening to these stories and relishing the chill down my spine. This fascination carried over into adulthood and I look for ghost tours whenever I visit someplace new.   During a recent visit to Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Brittany and I were invited to attend the Harrodsburg Ghost Walk. We met under the Osage Orange Tree at Old Fort Harrod State Park and met our tour guides, Jan Lewis and Graham Martin, who were dressed in period costume.  I was disappointed when I realized we were the only two attending the tour and Jan told us, “Since you are the only two people attending tonight, I have a proposition for you.” I was sure she was going to tell me we could cancel the tour if we wanted, but instead she said, “How would you like to do a mini investigation at the Mansion of Governor Magoffin?”

We walked to the mansion and along the way Graham and Jan shared the history of Harrodsburg. We stopped at old buildings and learned of their past, both historical and paranormal. Want to guess what these steps are used for? Brittany guessed public executions and was told, No one has ever guessed that before!” She was also wrong. They are carriage steps used by the women of Harrodsburg in the past.

We arrived at the mansion and were taken on a tour of the mansion and grounds. Personally, being able to explore a privately owned mansion that is presently being restored was almost as much fun as the ghost investigation. How often does that happen? After we toured the mansion, we were ready to set up the ghost hunting equipment. I never thought I would have a chance to see or touch this equipment “up close and personal.”

Brittany and I turned out to be bad ghost hunters.  Brittany picked up a piece of equipment and asked, “Did this really come named the Ghost Meter Pro or is it like the time my mom got a labeler and decided to label everything?” and when shown a picture of orbs, I asked if the street light was the orb.  By the end of the evening I had a much clearer understanding of how paranormal investigations work. Of course I know you are wondering if we saw any ghosts during the investigation. You’ll have to take the tour to find out if the ghosts are there!

Jan and Graham are extremely  knowledgeable about the history of Harrodsburg and entertaining as well.  If and when Ghost Hunters return, they will be featured in an episode on the history of Old Fort Harrod.  Harrodsburg Ghost Walks are available on Saturday evenings by reservation and Mystery Tours are available on Friday evenings by reservations and cost $10 per person for ages 12 and over. 11. I would be all over that! The only thing I got into trouble for as a kid was my fascination with the supernatural. But then again the women in my family were all born with ‘gifts’ so needless to say I wanted to learn more about them! I do actually get ‘orbs’ in my photography. My most ‘orb’ filled photo was actually taken right outside Yankee Stadium at night, I had taken literally tons of photos that day and evening and that particular one looked like the night was lit with them. Sounds like a tour I would really enjoy. 🙂
