The Best Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

One of our favorite dishes any time of the year is spaghetti. You can’t go wrong with spaghetti. Almost every kid I know likes it. It can be made in a hurry and can be made gluten-free just by substituting gluten-free noodles.  I use the “pre-made” canned stuff on days when I have no time, but I prefer this delicious Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe.  It’s naturally gluten free and dairy free so everyone can eat it. It’s so hearty and also makes a delicious sauce for pizza. I also use it as the sauce in baked spaghetti pie or lasagna.

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

This is my “go to” meal when I am in a hurry because this homemade spaghetti sauce recipe can be doubled or tripled and stored in the freezer until ready to be used.  Just set the sauce in the fridge in the morning and let thaw until dinner when you’re ready to use it.  If you’re especially rushed for time, premix the ingredients the night before. In the morning you can add the ingredients to a slow cooker and cook on low for four hours.

An easy spaghetti sauce that can be made in advance and frozen until ready to use.
Ingredients
  • 1/2 pound hamburger
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Noodles of choice
  • grated cheese, optional
Instructions
  1. Mix tomatoes, sugar, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper together in a bowl. Set aside. Meanwhile, crumble hamburger meat and Italian sausage together in a skillet. Cook until mixture is brown. Drain and add to tomato mixture. Add two tablespoons oil to skillet. Add onions, mushrooms and garlic. Saute until soft. Add the meat and tomato mixture to the skillet, bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook for twenty minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over noodles and top with cheese.

This sauce can be varied to suit different tastes too.  If you’re not a fan of mushrooms or onions leave them out.  Chopped bell pepper can be added to the onion mixture if desired.
