Honey Barbecue Cocktail Smokies Recipe

Since I began to cook gluten-free meals for my daughter the most commonly asked question I receive is, “But do these meals taste the same?” The answer is yes…and no. Some meals, especially those with gluten-free flours, might not have the same texture as the flour basted versions. The good news is that it’s so much easier to cook delicious gluten-free meals than it was when we started 9 years ago! Now I can prepare dishes, like this honey barbecue cocktail smokies recipe, that have no difference in taste! If you don’t need to worry about gluten-free, this recipe is still a hands-down favorite!

Honey Barbecue Cocktail Smokies Recipe

This recipe only has five ingredients and takes only minutes of hands-on preparation.  It’s also a snap to prepare on top of the stove or in the crockpot, whichever is easier. These cocktail smokies are a great appetizer for Super Bowl Sunday, holiday parties, or anytime you need a quick dish for a potluck! If you prefer, you can substitute meatballs for the cocktail smokies. Or why not make a batch of both? Your guests will thank you for it! If you don’t need the recipe to be prepared as gluten-free, just use regular honey barbecue sauce and cocktail smokies.

Green onions for garnish, optional

Here’s how to make them:

In a large bowl, mix together the barbecue sauce, paprika, salt, and honey.
Stir in the cocktail smokies until they are covered with sauce.
Because the cocktail smokies are precooked, you can add the cocktail smokies mixture to a large saucepan and cook until heated through. Bring the mixture to a boil on high heat, and then reduce the mixture to low or simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
If you prefer to use the crockpot, add the cocktail smokies mixture and cook on high for one hour or on low for two to four hours.

Gluten-Free Tip

If you are just starting a gluten-free diet, here’s a tip. Check the back of the label to see if it has the certified gluten-free label. It should look like the image below.  These products have been third-party tested to make sure the products are gluten-free as well as test the facilities they are produced in for gluten.  This is especially important if you have Celiac disease when even a trace of gluten can make you sick!
