How to Make Easy Gluten Free Lip Gloss

I never worried about gluten-free skin care products or makeup until my daughter was diagnosed with celiac. Whenever she used a product with gluten she got an eczema-like rash or hives. Neither of these is optimal. We noticed B.D. (before diagnosis) breakouts but never knew what caused it. Once I had to take her to the doctor when her lips swelled up three times their normal size. His first words were, “What on earth happened to you?” Embarrassing. Plus, it makes for one of those guilt-ridden bad parenting moments.

Now that we have a diagnosis, it seems like an easy fix, right? Wrong! The problem is gluten free skin care products are expensive. To combat this, I started researching how to make our own and stumbled across this super easy gluten-free lip gloss recipe. The best part? I was able to make 8 ounces of lip gloss for less than $2.00 with just two ingredients!

How to Make Your Own Gluten Free Lip Gloss

Seriously, all you need is two ingredients. I started with 8 ounces of petroleum jelly (think Vaseline) and three packs of individual flavored drink mix (like Crystal Lite.) The best part about this is you can use your favorite flavor of drink mix to suit your tastes. Or you can mix flavors to come up with your own unique flavors. Raspberry lemonade, anyone?

It’s so simple to make, ya’ll. Just place the petroleum jelly in a bowl and add the package of drink mix. Mix it together and keep adding drink mix until you get the color and intensity of flavor you want. Once it is mixed, store the gloss in an airtight container. I used four-ounce mason jars. I also used a travel sized container (usually available in the travel sizes section in stores) to keep lip gloss in my purse. We’ll always have some on hand.

If you want to “glam up” the lip gloss for evenings, crush 1 teaspoon of edible glitter and stir it into the mixture. Voila! You have instant sparkling lip gloss. Tip: Want to save some money? Pick up the petroleum jelly and drink mix at the dollar store. Or, if you prefer, substitute one package of unsweetened drink mix (like Kool-aid) instead of the three packages of Crystal Lite. And no, it doesn’t have to be Crystal Lite, the generic brand works just fine.

  • 8 ounces petroleum jelly
  • 3 individual packages of flavored drink mix (Like Crystal Lite) OR one package Kool-aid
  • 1 teaspoon, edible glitter, optional
Instructions

Store the lip gloss tightly sealed and keep it out of the sun, unless you like melted lip gloss! Not only does this taste great, it helps soften our lips too.  Have you ever made your own lip gloss? Do you have a favorite easy recipe?
