I have a confession to make. I constantly forget to pick up things I need to buy at the store, especially if it is something I don’t purchase on a weekly basis. Dryer sheets top the list of forgotten things and I find myself facing the battle of static cling. There’s nothing like having my skirts, on the rare occasion I decide to dress up, stick to all the wrong places. Around the time I was thinking how I was not going back to the store, I remembered I won a year’s supply of Swiffer products. I didn’t want to toss the Swiffer sheets after one use. I threw them in the washer and decided to use them as rags for cleaning. When I pulled one out of the drawer, inspiration struck. I could use them to make my own DIY dryer sheets. Here are three ways to make dryer sheets using common materials around the house. If you don’t have a supply of Swiffer sheets, you can use an old rag or bath cloth instead.
To begin you’ll need an old spray bottle, rags, old bath cloths, or those handy Swiffer sheets.
1. If you are like me, when you use conditioner for your hair, there’s always a little left in the bottom of the bottle that won’t come out. Add two tablespoons water to the bottle. Shake and pour a small amount onto your clothes. This should make approximately four dryer sheets, which can be used several times each.
2. If you have a bottle of fabric softener, mix 1/4 cup of fabric softener and 1/2 cup water together. Pour into a spray bottle. Spray a cloth with four to six squirts of the mixture and add the cloth to the dryer. This makes a very economical softener. Just spray the cloth before each use.
3. This is a way to make scented fabric softener. Mix 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup water together. Add five to ten drops of your favorite essential oil. (I’m partial to the scent of lavender.) Spray a cloth with four to six squirts and place in the dryer. This lasts forever a long time and costs around fifty cents!
