How to Train Your Dragon Family Night Ideas

The first thing the “littles” discovered when they could onto my daughter’s laptop was “How to Train Your Dragon.” The adventures of Toothless and Hiccup captivated them. So when we discovered the new Netflix original series, Dragons: Race to the Edge debuted on June 26th, we decided to plan a How to Train Your Dragon Family Night. These ideas are sure to be appreciated by any dragon lover!

We started by planning a picnic with our very own dragon food. We used Doritos as dragon scales, Bugles as dragon wings and Twizzlers as dragon tails.  We spread out a blanket and added some cool drinks to wash down our dragon goodies- this works great as a treat on a rainy day.

We also had a “dragon drawing contest.” We used sidewalk chalk to see who could draw Hiccup and Toothless.  Everyone was a winner and we celebrated by watching an episode of Dragons: Race to the Edge. Too bad the rain came and washed away our dragons!

And, who could forget a dragon treasure hunt? We used a Dragons: Race to the Edge map and hid clues around the house to discover new lands, with the map leading us to Dragon’s Edge; the dragon shaped island where Toothless and Hiccup have set up a base camp. (Because we do not have a dragon shaped island anywhere around our house, the kids had to pretend we found it.) Be sure to include dragon treats, like food we used in our picnic, at the final destination for a treat.

We needed our day making dragon selfies with fun photo props from Photo Booth Party props. Don’t the kids look cute?

The kids had a great time and we had fun family time on a rainy day.  If you haven’t seen Dragons: Race to the Edge, Hiccup and Toothless soar beyond the island of Berk in search of new dragons. They meet plenty and have lots of adventures along the way.

What are some of your favorite summer ideas for family nights?
