How To Transform a Room With Pittsburgh Paint

Painting has never been one of my favorite activities. On a scale of one to ten it ranks around a one because I don’t like the odor. Due to a lack of painting productivity on my part my son’s room had not been painted in ten years. The blue background with fluffy cloud swirls were fine when he was six but lately he’d been hinting for more masculine digs. Pittsburgh Paints came to my rescue with their Voice of Color  “Refresh Your Space” challenge. We received paint swatches to choose colors and I handed them over to my son. “Knock yourself out,” I said, “Choose whatever strikes your fancy.” He did, coming back to me with a request for a University of Georgia themed room, with red, black and white. This reminded me to never, ever allow my children to express themselves creatively again.

I headed to the nearest Pittsburgh Paints where the super friendly, knowledgeable staff didn’t even blink an eye over my unusual paint color request. They helped me find the perfect finish for a teenager’s room, one impervious to footprints. Don’t ask. They also recommended a low odor variety. Score! Now I no longer had to dread painting. I changed into my Pittsburgh Paints What’s Your Color? T-shirt, enlisted my son for help, and was ready for some serious painting. Little did I know what I was getting into with my son’s request to have half of the room black, half red and a stripe dividing the two.

I learned several things from this endeavor. Painting a room three different colors should be done over a course of two or three days, beginning at the top, allowing the paint to dry, and working our way down. Instead, I tried to do it all in one day, which I did in only eleven hours. Part of this could have been because I kept dripping paint. Note to self: let someone else paint the top part of the walls because I am terrible about dripping paint.  Neither my son or my husband had any trouble. Also, be sure the wall is measured correctly for the stripe and the tape used to divide the area is in the right position. I noticed that some parts of our stripe were a few centimeters off. I doubt if anyone who was not looking for it would notice unless they were studying the wall but at the time it was frustrating.

To be honest, I had serious doubts about how the room would look when we begin painting the bottom half black. After all, it’s very dark. I stopped every so often and shook my head, prompting my son to tell me, “It will be fine when it is finished.” It was a difficult process but we were all pleased with the results. During the day my son did remark that I should never indulge his whims again. And the smell? Barely noticeable because Pittsburgh Paints has no VOCs. My son didn’t even need the fan to be turned on in his room saying, “I don’t notice any odor.”

While my son has remarked that his Voice of Color has been “forever silenced” after the difficulty with using three paint colors, my appetite has been whetted to redo my bedroom and bath. My Voice of Color is only choosing one color for an easy paint job!
