Isaiah Mustafa is on a mission. This spring he is traveling to six cities around the country to help teenagers learn to “scent responsibly.” He arrived at Chattahoochee High School, outside of Atlanta, on Thursday, riding in a fire truck, amidst the excited cheers of high school students. Stepping onto the stage, he informed the students on how to properly apply Old Spice body spray. The secret is to hold the spray six inches away from the body and only push the trigger for two seconds.
I caught up with Isaiah after his presentation to ask him a few questions. I am never sure what to expect when I do an interview, but I found Isaiah to be genuinely patient, gracious and funny. I had suspected this after he successfully fielded questions from the students ranging from, “Will you eat my bacon? I would be honored to have you eat my bacon!” to “Will you make a picture with me?” and watching as he joked around while a student emptied an entire bottle of silly string on his head.
Naturally, I had to ferret out Isaiah’s past connections with Old Spice. “I grew up using Old Spice, ” he said, It was always available in the locker room after football practice.” So, why have a campaign to teach kids to smell responsibly? “Anything used in excess is too much,” he explained. “We were having gym teachers and coaches tell us of kids having allergies from overpowering scents. With Old Spice you don’t have to use much because the Refresh Body Spray lasts all day and will begin to work harder when you begin to sweat.”
While we chatted about good food to eat in the South (“Barbque is one thing that would tempt me to break my diet”) and which local attractions he might be visiting while in town, I asked how he became the Old Spice guy and what are the best parts of the job. “As an actor, I am always going to auditions, Old Spice was another one of my auditions. I read the script and I was just the best guy that day. This isn’t a hard job, it’s very engaging. I like to make people laugh. The best part of being the Old Spice Guy is when people tell me they think the commercials are funny I’m always texting the writers of the commercials and telling them, ‘They’re still funny.’ ”
Isaiah will be visiting Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas and Chicago, several big markets for Old Spice, with professional sports teams. He will also be staring in an episode of Anger Management this May with Charlie Sheen. “I play a guy in prison who asks Charlie to do me a favor,” he laughs, “and when it backfires I threaten to break his face.” What’s next for Isaiah? “I will be busy with the Old Spice tour this spring and summer, but this fall it is back to auditioning.” You can see more of Isaiah on the new Manboard digital soundboard featuring his most famous lines and just launched in celebration of Old Spice’s upcoming 76th anniversary.

I do not know the exact scent but it is the one my dad wore when I was growing up. I have a bottle of it packed away in a box that belonged to him and I can not wait until I find that box (we just moved). Most teenagers use way too much, my oldest son went through a phase where it was like he showered in cologne and nothing else.
