Having recently received a gazebo tent, I was determined to transform it into an outdoor room, complete with an outdoor chandelier. I’d seen them at Pottery Barn and at Lowe’s, but didn’t want to pay $50 or more. I was poking around at the thrift store when inspiration struck! Why not make my own? I purchased a plain light fixture for $9.97, brought it home and washed off the dust.
Next, I removed all the wires. This was no problem to do. I unscrewed the main components and removed the cord and then cut the other wires in the candle socket holders with scissors. Next, came the hard part. I had to snip the metal fasteners on each candle socket holder with wire cutters to remove them. Afterwards, it was not trouble to screw the washer back onto the candle socket.
I purchased a can of black indoor/outdoor paint at Walmart for 97 cents and sprayed the entire chandelier. Tip: Be sure to turn it over when it is dry and make sure you haven’t missed any spots. I wasn’t quite satisfied with the way it looked with my patio furniture I had just finished painting silver. I used some of the silver paint to dust a light coating of silver paint over the black coat, giving it a rustic look. I finished by adding miniature votive candles to each candle socket and hanging my chandelier with a black wire.
The total cost for my project came to $13.94, with $9.97 for the chandelier, 97 cents for a can of black spray paint and $3.00 for six scented votive candles. It adds character to my outdoor room and saved me over $40. The entire project took around one hour to create and that is including drying time for the paint!
What is your favorite outdoor project?

Wow, that is totally a super inexpensive idea. I need to have my own.
Great job! I definitely love how you spray painted it black, since I am not a huge fan of gold.
What a nice project. I love it when I find projects that are practical and affordable. The chandelier is really nice and I am sure it adds a lot of character to the outdoor gazebo.
This looks great. I’m such a klutz I will probably heart myself trying though.
Nice DIY! I need to try this myself. Looks great! And I love that it didn’t burn a whole in your wallet.

Wow, this is such a great idea and you did an awesome job on this. I’ve seen lights like at the Sally Anne for just a few dollars, it’s cool to see them turned into something more trendy.
What a fantastic idea! Frugal too, there’s plenty of home estate sales so you could find something to use for this project. perfect 🙂

Oh my gosh Pam! You are so creative and thrifty. I have got to do this in my gazebo. I hope they have a chandelier in our thrift shop.
That turned out GREAT! I love when I can turn something ugly into something useful and beautiful.
This is so pretty! I can’t believe it is so easy and cost effective to create a chandelier like this one. I think even I can do this!
