Can you believe it has been almost fifty years since Mary Poppins was released? What better way to celebrate the December 10th release than with an English tea party while watching the movie with the kids? Start by gathering some decorations to set a festive table. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just pick up some mismatched china, tea cups, utensils and a tea pot from the thrift store if you don’t happen to already have some on hand. Or, if you are worried they might get broken during the tea party, pick up some “fake” fancy plastic plates and utensils. Don’t like tea? Serve Mexican hot chocolate instead.
Snacks are easy to include. Add a small plate of sandwiches with your favorite toppings, cookies and a small tray of cheese slices and veggies. If you want to get fancy, cut the crusts off the edges of the bread and slice them into squares or use a cookie cutter to cut them into fancy shapes. Pull of the “fancy” linens (sometimes I use a quilt or a blanket to cover my table just for something different) and you are ready to party! This is also a good time to let the kids play dress up too.
When you have finished the tea party, snuggle on the couch and watch Mary Poppins. The movie, released for the first time on a two disc set includes Blu-ray, DVD, plus a digital copy and has been digitally restored. Special features include an all new Mary-oke sing along, the making of Mary Poppins, a Magical Musical reunion with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and a feature on becoming Mr. Sherman.
After you have finished watching the movie, sneak in a small educational experience by taking the kids outside and allowing them to draw pictures with sidewalk chalk just like Bert. You’ve made family memories with a classic film. What could be better?
