My Parent Plan- Interview with Beth Blecherman

Are you striving to balance work and family life? Wondering how to develop a successful blog? Need some direction on “having it all?”  I recently interviewed Beth Blecherman, founder of the popular blog, Techmamas.com, recognized as one of Forbes 2012 Top 100 Websites for Women, and author of the new book, My Parent Plan.  In her book, she discusses how to apply business principles to parenting. I had never thought of this before–having always kept anything I was doing as a business separate from parenting–but once she began to explain the principles they made perfect sense. One way Beth stays on top of her game is with Microsoft Office 365.  In my interview she explains digital note taking, staying connected in the cloud, short cuts to save time in our everyday life and how to clear chaos with a family calendar. She also offers tips on how to create a successful blog and her best advice for new bloggers.

I also received a copy of Beth’s new book and am sharing a few of her tips with you.  I enjoyed how she began her book by stating that she will not give a family plan, since there is not one single plan that fits all families, but rather show how to develop a plan that will be designed to meet the specific needs of individual families.  She reminds us “there is no one secret to achieving the work/life balance.”  This is a refreshing change of pace from books that offer “one secret to personal fulfillment” or “one secret to the perfect life.” After her step by step approach, she concludes the book with  a practical guide to implement the parenting plan.

How do you balance your personal and professional life? Do you have a plan for “me time” and “family time?” I would love to hear the tips you use in your everyday life.

  12. It’s a totally balancing act for sure. I try to make the time I am with my family fun and worthwhile. When they have me they have 100% of me. Doing SM for a living makes that hard, it does, but it shows my family that they are number one.

  13. I am still struggling to find the balance between the two, but I think I manage pretty well!

  14. My kids are out of the house already so it is a little late for me, but I wish I had done something like that when they were younger. 18. Family time is something we have a lot of as we make it a priority and plan our schedules accordingly. It’s me time that I’m lacking in. I need to get better about taking a little time to just relax and would love to find more time to read. These tips are really helpful and I’m enjoying the tips in the comments, too!

  19. I apply a lot of the principles that I learned in management classes to my daily life. One of the big ones is getting other peoples monkeys off my back, and giving the work to the appropriate person. This helps the kiddos take responsibility for their chores.
