My Shocking Mom Confession

Have you noticed when people talk about parenting they almost always talk about the fun aspects, like the relaxing family day at the beach or the cute project their child made for them? Less often do we see the not so fun side of parenting, like the huge fit the toddler had on the way to the beach or how the floor was covered with a layer of glue after the project was finished.  To show that our family is not perfect, I am sharing my deep, dark mom confessions because parenting isn’t easy.

My daughter was loud and demanding from the moment she was born.  She cried constantly and never sleep. I would like to say that this stopped after a few months, but she developed night terrors.  All through her toddler years she would cry for an hour, wake up and scream at the top of her lungs for an hour or two, fall asleep for another hour and repeat the process all night long, every single night.  When she turned two I went back to work part time  because my mom offered to keep her one night a week and I could get some sleep.

I’ve also resorted to “creative stories” to help overcome my kids’ fears.  After a skunk crawled under our old home and sprayed, my son developed a deathly fear of the animals.  We tried everything we could think of to help reduce the fear, but nothing worked. When we moved into our new home we told him, “Don’t worry about skunks. They aren’t allowed to come into the city limits.”  We stated this in a matter of fact way and he never mentioned skunks again. It wasn’t until a few years later when he told me, “Hey! There’s a skunk! They are not allowed in the city limits!” that I realized how well this strategy had worked.

What is your most shocking mom confession?

I can’t wait for that show to start! It looks really funny!

  4. I’ve been seeing the previews for this show and it looks pretty funny. I love Ana Farris. Thanks for sharing your struggles…makes me remember we all go through them!

  5. The show sounds like life, complicated with lots of twists and turns. Can’t wait to check it out! And yes, I am one of those moms whose toddler decides to pitch a fit in the the middle of the grocery store and I am NOT EVEN CLOSE to being finished shopping. We have all been there. 🙂

  6. This is a great post and I’m sure we can all relate! My oldest is 16, I probably have too many confessions to make. Here’s one for ya… I lost my 3 yr. old on Daytona Beach one year. She was gone for about an hour. The beach control people were helping me look for her. I don’t know how she got away from me?!?

  7. You are right, they almost always discuss the fun side of parenting but don’t always tell you the truth about the rest of the stuff. Lol

  8. hahaha I love your theory .. I have those little “White lies” for the kids, too.. I think we all do and it makes our day to day that much easier

  9. Edgy and realistic. My kind of show!

  10. I am not a mom, but I really want to watch this show! I love when moms are honest and don’t make it all seem like butterflies and rainbows! Let’s keep it real here!!

  11. This sounds like my kind of show! My daughter was eight before she realized she wouldn’t go jail for the rest of her life if she ever told a lie. 🙂

  12. You are right people don’t discuss the difficult things in parenting. It sure isn’t all sunshine and rainbows that is for sure. I am curious about the new show my son loves Anna Farris so I am sure I will see it.

  13. My preschooler thinks I work in the school office. This has helped stop the steady flow of tears when I drop him off in the mornings 😉

  14. I do not watch much TV lately. I will have to check this show out since it is a comedy and I like the theme.
It is really hard to deal with night terrors. I had no clue about night terrors until two of my grandchildren started to have night terrors. Its good your mom gave you a night off.

  15. Oh boy, yes there are so many behind the scenes things going on for parents everywhere. Count me in on that! I don’t think I could name only one! Well, here is the most recent confession… I encouraged my son to skip football practice today because the truth is.. I needed a break. I feel only sort of bad about it!

  16. I gotta definitely watch this one! Thanks will look it up!

  17. That is funny that skunks are not allowed in city limits. 🙂

  18. HA, what a fun looking new series. I’ll have to catch it to see how it is.

  19. I just saw a commercial about that series and plan on watching it. lol

  20. that was pretty funny, and it made me laugh. The show seems very cool, I will have to check it out. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Looks like a nice show for all the moms 😀 😛

  22. That’s hilarious about the skunks! I agree, if you don’t make too big a deal about it, seems to work!

  23. I will definitely have to check out this series. It sounds like it could be a good watch. I love the skunk story too. Too funny.

I remember when my youngest son was really into name brand basketball shoes and my husband told a white lie and about how a particular shoe was promoted by a NBA player just so he would accept the cheaper shoe without fussing. It eventually came back to haunt him when of course my son found out from other kids that they were not.

  24. My oldest had night terrors, too. What a horrible thing for parents to have to deal with! The first confession I have come to mind is that we tell our children all the time if they don’t behave we’re going to sell them to the gypsies, sometimes for a very cheap price.

  25. Looks like a fantastic show – I’ll have to keep an eye out and see if we get it over here. x

  26. truth leads us all 🙂 thanks for sharing.

  27. Hahaha sounds so fun! Mums are mums!

  28. looks like an interesting show. i don’t have anything to watch at the moment so i’ll try an check this out 😀

  29. Awe, poor little guy afraid of skunks. I can’t blame him.

I know about sleepless nights too. My son doesn’t have night terrors, thank goodness, but he certainly wakes me up at odd hours and always before the sun comes up.

  30. I’m not a mom yet, but I hope to be someday. My sister is a working mom, and I know she finds it really frustrating when her “mommy friends” try to act like everything is perfect all the time. She loves her life and her kids, but it is messy and chaotic sometimes, and it’s okay to acknowledge that and still adore it! 🙂

  31. You are right about people gliding over the struggles and only highlighting the fun times. Fear is a hard thing to overcome in a child. My grand daughter was deathly afraid of my washer that was outside in a shed to make room in the house so it was off balanced and would rock. I finally got so tired of her being afraid of it when she went out there with me to wash that I just picked her up and sat her on it. She thought it was the greatest ride ever and then often would ask if she could ‘ride the washer’ Fear solved. Thanks for sharing about this show. I’ll try not to miss it.

  32. The skunk story was funny and made me giggle. I have seen this show advertise and think it is a catch 22 for me. Funny but sad at the same time. Sad in its dysfunction. But hey, normal is just a setting on my dryer anyway.

  33. My son had separation anxiety and one time we went to this kid’s indoor playground and my son thought I was going to leave him and he threw up all over the nice, clean sanitized mats. It was one of THOSE moments that you talk about. This show sounds like a riot….showing the real life moments that I’m sure I can relate to!

  34. This sounds like a really fun series. I’m always looking for new really funny shows to watch. Will have to set my DVR for the pilot and check it out.

  35. Thanks for making me aware of this new show…. I am going to be sure to set my recorder to catch it because I will probably forget if I don’t. Sounds like it is going to be a great one.

  36. Looks like a fun new series. Thanks for making me aware of it.
I had to chuckle at your skunk story as our neighbor had a skunk living under his deck all summer. It sprayed most of the dogs in the neighborhood and a few unsuspecting kids that had no clue what a skunk was. It has now mysteriously disappeared.
