Did you know that February is Great American Pie Month? If you didn’t, don’t worry. I had no idea either. Since I am always down to celebrate a “holiday” with pie, I decided to make a classic family dessert that’s been passed down through several generations; this Old-Fashioned Fudge Pie Recipe.
Old Fashioned Fudge Pie Recipe
This is an old family recipe passed down from my Mother-in-Law. I found the handwritten copy of our old family recipe stashed away in my Mother-in-law’s recipe box. A little note was attached that read, “Good.” You know you can’t go wrong with “good” family recipes. This pie is delicious served at room temperature, but it’s even better served warm and topped with whipped cream, a scoop of ice cream, or confectioner’s sugar.
This fudge pie is full of rich, chocolate flavor. It’s almost like a brownie added into a pie crust. The only thing I changed in our recipe was the use of a pre-made pie shell from the freezer section instead of a homemade crust. I used the pre-made crust to save time, but feel free to make your own crust if you prefer.
Preparation Tips:
- Need it to be gluten-free? Replace the all-purpose flour with ½ cup gluten-free one-to-one all-purpose baking flour and use a gluten-free pie crust.
- How to blind-bake a pie crust. Preheat the oven to 350. Using a fork, prick holes in the bottom and sides of the crust. Bake for 10 minutes or until the crust is light brown and flaky.
Make Your Own Self-Rising Flour:
This recipe calls for self-rising flour. If you only have all-purpose on hand, make your own with this quick and easy recipe. This makes one cup of self-rising flour. This recipe can be doubled or tripled to make the amount needed for recipes.
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- In a medium bowl, add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir until well-blended and the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Air Fryer Method
Air Fryers make fried foods with less fat and calories than traditional frying methods. But, if frying is the only thing you’re using the air fryer for, you’re missing out. There are so many things to prepare in the air fryer; delicious blackened roasts, tender fried chicken, and surprise, desserts! You can bake everything from cookies to sweet rolls to pies. Here’s how to make our Old-Fashioned Fudge Pie in the air fryer.
- Note: This recipe was tested in a 6-quart Instant Pot Vortex air-fryer. It should work in any size 6-quart or above. If you have a smaller air fryer, you can prepare the recipe in individual ramekins using mini pie crusts.
- Cooking time may vary between air-fryer brands.
- Tip: If preparing the pie in the air-fryer, do NOT pre-bake the pie shell as you would using the oven preparation method.
- Prepare the filling recipe as directed in the recipe.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees.
- Pour the chocolate filling into the crust.
- Cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Let sit for 5 minutes before dusting with confectioners’ sugar, if using.
