I have been fascinated by the story of the Titanic since I was a child. I wondered how a ship billed as unsinkable could have sunk on her maiden voyage across the Atlantic. My bucket list included exploring the wreck of the Titanic and exploring her treasures. Now that I am an adult I know I will never be able to take a trip in a submersible to see the Titanic lying on the ocean floor so I did the next best thing; explored artifacts from the ship at the Titanic Museum and Attraction in Pigeon Forge.
We could see the ship’s hull long before we arrived, rising up in the distance and beckoning us to explore. We were greeted by a crew member, dressed in authentic ship’s garb, and given a boarding pass with the name and history of an actual Titanic passenger or crew member. At the end of the tour we could check the survivor’s wall and see if we had perished or been rescued. I was Emma Bliss, age 45, one of the few females employed on the Titanic.
New to the attraction this year is the “Discover the Children of the Titanic” which features a special audio tour designed for children and artifacts recovered from the wreck, including rare toys belonging to some of the child survivors. The museum also provides kid friendly features throughout the ship; they can shovel coal into the furnace, touch an iceberg, steer the ship and learn fun facts by answering questions placed around the exhibits. Interesting fact: Did you know there were ten dogs traveling with their owners during this voyage?
One of the fascinating features to me is the replica of the grand staircase leading to the exhibits on the second floor. Originally designed with marble steps, the Titanic owners wanted their 1st class customers to receive the very latest in amenities. They ripped out the marble to replace it with the very latest in technology-linoleum. (Yes, I am serious.) Stepping into the second floor we are treated to replicas of first class; a luxurious hallway and the suite of Isidor and Ida Strauss. Their love story always brings tears to my eyes. Isidor, being a male passenger, was not allowed on the lifeboat as they were seating women and children. He insisted his wife, Ida, board the lifeboat. Instead, she gave her fur coat to her maid, informing Isidor, “We have lived together too many years. Where you go, I go.” They were last seen holding hands on the deck before they perished.
No trip to the Titanic would be complete without a salute to the film by James Cameron. An entire room is filled with memorabilia, including the dress Kate Winslet wore when she was running through the frigid water. The Titanic museum and attraction is a respectful tribute to the 2,208 passengers and crew aboard the ship the night of the disaster. Attention is paid to every detail and crew members are available throughout to share the stories of everyone, from third class passengers to millionaires. This museum is truly a life changing experience and a fitting memorial to those who perished.
