The Rose of The Lake: A Traveler’s Dream

Nestled in the secluded village of Grand Rivers, only twenty five minutes from Land of the Lakes, is a hidden gem, The Rose of The Lake Bed and Breakfast.  Having always stayed in hotels or resorts, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a bed & breakfast, but I was impressed from the minute I arrived.  We were greeted by the owner, Chip Tullar, and the house manager, Patsy, like we were old friends.  After giving us a quick tour of the house,  Chip graciously told us we were welcome to use the grilling area and kitchen to prepare our dinner. Although Bryan and I had taken this trip by ourselves, I wish the kids would have been along for the night we spent here!  The basement had been transformed into a game room with a 50 inch television, a Wii, a pool table and other goodies.  The sparkling pool outside was the icing on the cake.   I couldn’t believe I had forgotten my swimsuit and had to miss out!

We had planned to dine at Patti’s 1800’s Settlement that evening, and Chip offered us the use of his golf cart to drive the short distance to the restaurant.    I think driving the golf cart was the highlight of Bryan’s evening.  I’m pretty sure he would have driven around to explore more of the areaif darkness had not descended on us.

When we arrived back to the inn from dinner, we spent time sitting on the balcony overlooking Turtle Bay and stargazing.  We had the house mostly to ourselves that evening, so when we went inside I challenged Bryan to a game of pool.  I am sad to say, even with me cheating and him claiming he was “off his game,” he beat me every time.

When we were finally ready for bed, we retired to our guest room, The Tuscan.  The large room contained a King sized bed, a queen sized bed, our own private bathroom, a separate entry from the huge wrap around porch, an entry from the living room, our own flat screen television and our own mini fridge.   What impressed me most was the cleanliness! The entire place was spotless.  (This is why my home could never be a B&B.)

The next morning I chatted with Patsy as she made breakfast, and made breakfast, and made breakfast.  All I can say was amazing.  She made honey glazed biscuits, eggs & ham cups with a bearnaise sauce, prime rib quiche, hash browns,  homemade sticky buns, sausage, bacon, a fruit bowl topped with a creamy, homemade banana pudding and more.  I am still remembering that breakfast, while Bryan has asked me to recreate several of those dishes at home.

Usually when I go to a hotel or resort I’m pleased with the service,  but the owners, Chip and Michael Lee, and the house manager, Patsy, went out of their way to give excellent service.  As we were leaving Bryan turned to me and said, “We are coming back here and bringing our entire family.”  That’s a first in all our years of travel!

We received a complementary night’s stay at the Rose of The Lake, but all opinions are my own. We’ll definitely be taking our family.
