How To Create Your Ideal Bedroom

Did you know the average person spends 1/3 of their lifetime asleep? It’s also an important factor in good health.  Studies by the News In Health association have linked lack of sleep to disruptions in the immune system, the cardiovascular system, and in stress and hormone levels. According to Dr. Merrill Mitler, a sleep expert and neuroscientist at News In Health, “Loss of sleep impairs your higher levels of reasoning, problem-solving and attention to detail.” That’s a lot of health benefits relying on a good sleep schedule!  The best way to combat the lack of sleep is to create a relaxing haven in the bedroom.  Here are some Tips to Create the Ideal Bedroom For Better Sleep.

Tips to Create the Ideal Bedroom For Better Sleep

To make the most of our sleeping time, we want to be comfortable. Here are five ways to create a peaceful bedroom where you’ll want to fall asleep.

1. Invest in a Good Mattress and good bedding. The best way to be comfortable is to invest in a good mattress and a set of luxury linens.  I know you might be saying, as I did, I can purchase a pair of sheets cheap. Why should I spend good money on sheets? Is there really a difference? Yes, yes, there is. I discovered this the first time I slept in a luxury hotel.
Organic Lofton Sheets

The easiest way to solve this problem and create your own ‘sleep sanctuary’ is by investing in luxury bedding like the sheets and pillows from Saatva Dreams. The Lofton Organic Sheet Set, available in three colors; white, ivory, and grey, and in sizes from twin to California King, is made with a 300 count organic cotton weave that uses long staple cotton for durability. These fair trade certified sheets are more expensive than sheets found in department stores, but they’re specially designed to promote cool, comfortable, breathable sleep. Seriously. Once I discovered the difference between quality sheets and “cheap sheets,” these are all I use. I really have seen a difference in my sleep patterns when I’m more comfortable.

High-quality pillows like the Saatva Pillow also help promote quality sleep. Made from 100% cotton, micro-denier fiber, and shredded 100% American Talalay latex, these pillows are equal to high-quality hotel pillows. This is a three-part pillow with a machine washable outer layer, a removable inner pillow, and a cover made with 100% organic cotton to wick away moisture and keep the head cool. Designed to provide both responsive neck and spine support, you can enjoy more good nights of rest. Available in queen and king sizes, these pillows spread across the bed, unlike the smaller pillows that allow your head to fall off the pillow in the middle of the night. Once again, the pillows are more of an initial investment up front, but the sleep benefits outweigh the cost.

2. Create a serene setting. By painting the walls in calming colors and getting rid of clutter, you can help create a sense of serenity. According to HGTV, blues are an ideal color for bedrooms because of their soothing effects. The same goes for neutrals. If you prefer bright colors, paint the bedroom in a neutral color and add pops of color with bedspreads, pictures, pillows, or accessories.

3. Get rid of the lights. Having trouble falling asleep? It could be caused by light. Melatonin is a chemical generated by our body to induce sleep, but according to sleep researcher Christopher Drake, Ph.D., “light actually suppresses melatonin.” If you’re falling asleep to the television, have bright lights shining in the window, or have the glare of a clock beside your bed, it could be causing your body not to fall asleep. A good solution for getting rid of outside light is investing in a set of light darkening curtains.

4. Control the temperature. The ideal temperature for falling asleep, according to sleep.org, is between 60 to 68 degrees. During the night body temperature drops slightly. A comfortable bedroom temperature helps keep the body temperature at its peak level for sleeping, according to Ralph Downey III, Ph.D., chief of sleep medicine at Loma Linda University. Experiment with the thermostat settings to find the best temperature for your body.

5. Get white noise. Do you find yourself waking up whenever there is noise? The last time I stayed at a historic inn I was kept awake by the sound of the television wafting through the thin floors of the room above me. I tried adding headphones and tried putting a pillow over my head. Nothing worked. Then, I remembered I could use a white noise app on my phone. Voila! Instant relief. Within 15 minutes I was asleep. Why does this work? According to Greg Jacobs, who wrote the book, Say Goodnight to Insomnia, “white noise blocks distracting noises and produces soothing sounds that are relaxing and help to induce sleep.”
